Ex. 10:12-20
12 Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt, and eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left.' 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD directed an east wind on the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled in all the territory of Egypt; they were very numerous. There had never been so many locusts, nor would there be so many again. 15 For they covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Thus nothing green was left on tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh hurriedly called for Moses and Aaron, and he said, 'I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and make supplication to the LORD your God, that He would only remove this death from me.' 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the LORD. 19 So the LORD shifted the wind to a very strong west wind which took up the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea; not one locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.
Pharaoh's last comment was taken for a no, so the plague was to receive a 'go.' God spoke, Psa. 105:34, and the locusts came in huge waves.
Pharaoh and anyone in sight of Moses could see Moses rod being raised, and could make the link between the command of God, or warning, and the action of the event. Moses did not really do anything that would cause the locusts to propagate, or to otherwise come into existence. God alone caused their numbers and their coming into Egypt, as opposed to going to some other place.
The east wind brought the locusts in the direction God commanded, from the peninsula (across the Red Sea) into Egypt. Note that the sea did not prevent their arrival, but was used later for their destruction.
This eighth plague is the last and final property plague. This is an overwhelming plague that surrounds, smothers, and otherwise destroys the economy of Egypt along with the lives, or life styles, of its citizens. God clamps down the vice on the nation, waiting for someone to call out 'uncle.' And to some extent it probably worked to a point. Pharaoh hurriedly called for Moses. This is a panic call. We can only guess the politics going on around Pharaoh. Note that even though Pharaoh is 'supposed to be all powerful', there were often successions of Pharaoh's due to assassinations, and other power intrigues. So this would be no different. Those who demanded that Pharaoh get rid of these Hebrews prior to the Plague, will now be extremely angry with Pharaoh in bringing the plague on them.
Pharaoh describes this plague as 'death'. It means death politically for him, and death financially for those of wealth, and death for the citizens of Egypt in their broken lives due to the economic disaster. All of this occurred over a very short period of just a few months.
The disaster was due to innumerable locusts, which would be the worst storm of locusts in all of history. Nothing was left uneaten by the locusts, not to mention the nuisance they caused for daily life, loss of sleep, the many disruptions, etc.
Imagine what life would be like if our leadership, following the events of last September, took no action, as Pharaoh has in effect taken no action. Our economy would be far worse, more attacks would occur, more fear, more unemployment, etc. It could have been really ugly for us all. Remember that God controls history, and in hindsight we have to all agree that the election of last year in this country tilted in the correct direction, such that the right people would be in office when this attack took place. This of course has led to the response that as come from this country as we all have witnessed. We can speculate as to what the situation would have been if the election had gone the other way, but speculation is for television, and social parties. The facts remain regardless of how you personally voted or of how your political thinking runs.
A country's spiritual status is often reflected in its leadership. Or, perhaps it is better said, that the leadership is often a reflection of the country's spiritual status. Our country was teetering on the fence between liberal thinking and conservative thinking, or a 50 -50 split. A couple of elections ago that division was more heavily leaning on the conservative side, so our country's spiritual state (if you use the elections as a thermometer), has been sliding slowly downward.
Egypt's spiritual state was on the very low side, thus its destruction was on the horizon as it continued its defiant attitude toward God and Gods principles for life. Egypt's leadership was concerned with 'me' not the welfare of the citizens. 'Take this death from me ...', are Pharaoh's words. He cared nothing for anyone but himself.
'Ask 'your' God.' Pharaoh still refuses to recognize God despite these overwhelming plagues that have come upon Egypt in their great historical severity and in close succession. Any normal person would look at these events and the unusual series of them, and come to the conclusion that this was anything but normal. Pharaoh was angry at Moses. The Egyptians were angry at the Hebrews. Everyone just wanted them all to get out, but Pharaoh was still on his own ego trip. So, promise anything to get rid of the locusts, then return to the same old attitude.
All this while Pharaoh was wanting each successive plague to be ended. Pharaoh had no ability to end any of them. God ended them all. Pharaoh refused to look inside his own soul where the real plague of life was consuming him - his hardness or growing callousness closing over his soul. Over this he did have control through his own volition, which he defiantly refused to change. The leadership was negative, the nation was negative, and all these disasters did not serve to change their minds. The darkness of their final days was now very near, and death follows darkness.
We can all look at the mirror of the Word of God to make sure that we are on the correct path in each of our lives. Just as God placed the right people in power in our time, so back then, God placed the right people in power to demonstrate His power, to demonstrate the evils of negative volition and the misery it causes, and so forth. By this we can gauge or lives and prevent disasters from getting the best of us.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
