Lesson # Exodus 8:20-23
Study Material - Exodus 8:20-23
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Ex. 8:20-23
20 Now the LORD said to Moses, 'Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh, as he comes out to the water, and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD,' Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 21 For if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of insects on you and on your servants and on your people and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of insects, and also the ground on which they dwell. 22 But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of insects will be there, in order that you may know that I, the LORD, am in the midst of the land. 23 And I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall occur.'
Again the approach to Pharaoh just as before. Make the request, allow Pharaoh to decline, then wham-o, give it to him.
This time the insects are a bit bigger than the last plague which was an irritating plague, but now this plague will bring with it greater numbers of insects, and they will be confined to areas other than the land of Goshen, the residence of the Hebrews.
As a general rule we know that insects cannot be directed in where they go. Especially if there are swarms and swarms of them. They are more than a nuisance. They are disruptive.
These insects are a combination of flies, and some types of beetles as some commentators suggest. The word for swarms is 'arob', meaning diverse or mixture, suggesting various types of insects, but it is connected with 'ha', making it 'ha-arob' directing it to mean not all insects but just a few that are more severe due to their bites.
They are pests to people, covering the ground and saturate the homes and buildings (business, government, etc.) of the Egyptians. You cannot walk in sandals or barefoot, or wear shorts lest your feet and legs get bit.
The Hebrews are set apart, redeemed, from this plague. The former plagues affected the entire land to demonstrate the magnitude of Gods power. Here geographical distinctions between the Hebrews and the Egyptians are made. Insects alone cannot make that kind of distinction. Only God can produce that kind of control.
Again the date of this plague's beginning is given. Pharaoh has time to think it over and repent as it were Pharaoh is given advanced warning. He knows exactly what he is going to face. He remains defiant to his own suffering. Such is the nature of a person apathetic, or generally negative, or antagonistically defiant toward God. You do not have to be defiant to the extreme, as Pharaoh is, to be the victim of your own bad decisions.
And as a victim one suffers externally from other people, environment, and such things that affect all of us. They also suffer from events in the world that pertain exclusively to them. And last, they suffer from the damage (hardness or scar tissue which eventually chokes out the soul) they do to their own soul. The soul has to breath, thus the inhale, exhale references we see throughout the Bible. The soul needs to take in proper nourishment (Bible doctrine) or if suffers health wise. As it suffers, as the defiance whether small or great in ones attitude, develops the hardness of the soul, then the soul slowly chokes or suffocates. Death results after a very bad and miserable life.
Now think of some other examples we have already have already studied. Abraham and his encounter with Pharaoh, when he lied regarding his wife, 'She is my sister.' The same with Abimelech. Esau traded his birthright for a meal. Sodom traded their lives for their lusts.
The Pharaoh of Abraham's day as well as Abimelech, saw the problem in their lives, and it did not take them very long to figure out what they needed to do to solve their problem. Esau threw away his destiny. Sodom lost everything.
Pharaoh has had several plagues sent upon him and the nation, and they have come one right after another. Furthermore, Pharaoh has had many warnings, yet he remains defiant. He has no rights to the Hebrews. Man has no ownership rights over man. God owns the Hebrews. All believers in Christ belong to Gods family.
Now another plague is upon them, disrupting the economy, social activity, and health bug bits transmit disease. So the threat is growing with this fourth plague.
Sometimes people need to really suffer before they wake up. Sometimes they just never catch on, and they go to their death bed even to their last breath still defiant towards changing their own life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
