Exodus 3:12-15

Lesson # Exodus 3:12-15
Study Material - Exodus 3:12-15

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 3:12-15

12 And He said, 'Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.' 13 Then Moses said to God, 'Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I shall say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?' 14 And God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM'; and He said, 'Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'' 15 And God, furthermore, said to Moses, 'Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.

Moses, some 40 years ago, thought that he was someone important, but realized, that even within a day of being caught up in the violence with the Egyptian that he killed while coming to the aid of the Hebrew that was being beaten, That he was really nothing in this life. He was quickly exiled and demoted to the position of shepherd. He lost all that he had grown up with, his wealth, position, title, and so forth.

In that time his attitude humbled considerably. Now his attitude is, 'Who am I? Why would God want to use me? I am nothing by comparison.' This is of course the point in which we all need to place our own lives with respect to this world. We are really nothing when it comes right down to the nitty gritty of life. There really isn't a lot that we have control over. Our hearts could stop beating immediately and then where would we be? Besides on the floor.

Now Moses asks What Gods name is. 'Who shall I say is sending me?' Forty years ago the Hebrews commented, 'Who has made you judge over us?', in their sarcasm. Then, it was Moses that had decided that he could help them. He appointed himself. But God quickly canceled that appointment. Now of course, some 40 years later, that question can be answered. 'God is sending me.'

Moses receives a clear answer, though it might not be clear to us, and it probably was not clear to the Hebrews in Egypt because they were and had been negative toward God for a long time. The first order of business when learning about God is to know just who He is. But more than that we need to humble ourselves when addressing God. We are not His equal. We are nothing. In Judg. 13:8, Manoah asks Gods name. Knowing that God is God is enough. It important that we not patronize God, but seek His guidance. Prov. 30:4, who has done what God has done? Job 26:14, God is greater than we have the capacity to ever know or understand.

Also, before we get into the names used, Moses has some deficiencies that he needs to address. Moses thinks of himself as unworthy, therefore he cannot approach Pharaoh (but notice that he is approaching God. Who is greater God or Pharaoh). Second, Moses lacks skill in language, in articulation, in politics. Moses has been guiding sheep for decades now, not sparing with bureaucrats. Moses lacks command. The Hebrews have already rejected him once and he ran away. Won't they think less of him now. Today's press always looks at the negatives of a possible candidate for office. They would have a field day with Moses - prince, an indictment for murder, a runaway. Now God is sending you back!!! Against Pharaoh!! You can hear the laughter clear across the desert. The task is of course impossible.

God has the perfect answer.

I AM that I AM is sending you. I AM is sending you. Jehovah Elohim is sending you. The God of your fathers is sending you. El Shaddai is sending you. The one and the same God that has always been with you and every generation in the past and to come, is sending you.

I am, 'hayah', stands for existence, to exist, the breath of existence, the essence of existence, the desirable existence, therefore it means the self existing one, the eternally existing one. It implies more however. To self exist means that provision needs to be available, so the first 'I Am' comes to mean not a reference for God the Father, followed by the Son and the Spirit as you'll read in most commentaries, but eternal existence, followed by the logic of eternal self sufficiency, followed by an inexhaustible fountain of provision. This concludes that God is the origin of all and the source of all and will continue as such forever.

Jehovah Elohim is the God of your fathers. El Shaddai, was the reference to Abraham. The All Powerful All Mighty. The savior was revealed to Adam. The personal use of the name Jehovah recognizes the second person of the trinity - Elohim is the plural of the Godhead.

This is Jesus Christ, now resident in the burning bush. A pre-incarnate manifestation, sometimes referred to as the Angel of the Lord, who has selected Moses to go to Egypt to free the very people who have already rejected him.

A typical reaction of people when they have been rubbed the wrong way is to simply keep going and forgetting those who have been rude to them, or in some cases, getting even. Not so with God. God is faithful and just. His name stands forever. He is the one and only God, since yesterday in eternity past, is now in our present time and will always be the one and only true God forever. There is none other.

Why would anyone ask Gods name? Only the confused and the ignorant would ask, demonstrating their lack of knowledge of God, and therefore their lack of true interest. Anyone who has knowledge of God already knows His name. So to begin with, it is enough to know that God is everything imaginable that a person could want or need, and infinitely more.
