Exodus 3:1

Lesson # Exodus 3:1
Study Material - Exodus 3:1

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 3:1

1 Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Eighty years have passed since the birth of Moses, and it is only at this late date in his life that the meeting with God is about to occur. We have already seen that Moses was under the presumption that it was he who would be the deliverer of his people, with all the circumstances of his birth, his being raised in Pharaoh's house and so forth. He had a could idea of his purpose, but the timing and the means of their deliverance was not made known to him, nor his exact role. Moses had not spoken to God. His presumption was his idea alone based on what information he had from his history and circumstances.

The Hebrews were not ready to be delivered as we saw when we read of their comments to him. They were not ready to accept him. In verse 18, the Hebrews will listen, whereas 40 years earlier, they would not.

We all have some idea as to what it is we want in our life. We go through school, we get jobs, we pursue our dreams to the extent we can afford them. We did not have any control over the circumstances of our birth, and generally have little control over our lives as we grow up. Even when we leave our homes and go out on our own, our dreams have certain limitations.

Moses had no control over his life. For forty years he was a prince in the palace of Pharaoh. The next forty years he was a shepherd. Certainly a lower position from the worlds point of view. But from Gods view, these two positions have no difference. God is able to work out His plan regardless of our circumstances. So if you are fresh out of college and ready to attack the world, or if you are freshly out of a divorce and your life is now destroyed (in your eyes), or whatever your situation happens to be, then so long as you are alive and breathing, God has a plan for your life.

Your preparation for Gods use for you does not come from pushing a pen or a broom, but from your intake of Bible doctrine. Earlier on, Moses was interested in helping his people from the position of the palace, not from the position of his spiritual growth. God placed him in a compromising position, one over which he had no control, and moved him totally away from Egypt. This enabled Moses to really learn Bible doctrine, not necessarily his purpose in life, but to gain a strong foundation in Gods Word.

In Egypt he knew the prophecies and promises to Abraham, but he made no inquiry of God. Now that he is a shepherd and has time on his hand as well as Bible doctrine in his soul, he will make inquiry when he sees the burning bush. This sight will spark his spiritual curiosity. Curiosity and the desire to know are necessities before one can advance in the spiritual life.

Moses is doing his job, watching the sheep. He happens to move the sheep near the Horeb mountain range in the southern portion of the Sinai Peninsula where he will encounter the burning bush.

Note. In life nothing happens by chance. Moses was not accidentally placed in a basket right at the spot that the childless daughter of Pharaoh was going to bathe. He did not accidentally happen upon the beating of a Hebrew which turned into his killing of the Egyptian. He did not just happen to stop at the well of the priest of Midian, nor happen to be grazing near the mountain where God (Jesus Christ) was in a burning bush just waiting for someone to stop by.

Jesus Christ controls history. Our lives will have ups and downs. We may start out in our lives with great plans, hopes and dreams, only to discover that life does not always go as planned. If you ignore God in your life then you will find yourself wandering in the desert and you'll never see that burning bush. But if you embrace God in your life and utilize His commands in your life (study continually, remain in fellowship, etc.), then one day you will come face to face with that burning bush which was designed and placed specifically for you.

Moses has had two 40 year phases in his life. He is 80 now and his third phase of life is about to unfold, and for the first time he will receive his orders, but this time on Gods terms, not those of Egypt.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
