Ecclesiastes 6:10

Eccl. 6:10

10 Whatever exists has already been named, and it is known what man is; for he cannot dispute with him who is stronger than he is.

'Whatever', and that means everything under creation, excluding nothing real or imagined, then everything in history, everything in existence, has already been determined, 'named'.

This verse has three components with which we need to understand so that we can orient to history and of course reality. History is predetermined, and by that I mean that there has been a determination in eternity past with regard to what events would occur in history, including every decision you would make. Does this mean that God has already decided your life for you. Yes and no.

God, in eternity past, looked down through the tunnels of time, in His omniscience and considered all possibilities for history, to the smallest detail. He decided on the best plan for history, that would result in the best life for each one of us, for all of mankind, angels, etc. This determination is called in theology, the divine decrees. This is the concept which ascribes to God His foreknowledge of all that will actually occur in history. While omniscience in God, gives Him the knowledge of all of the possible outcomes of every decision and even those decisions that could have been made but were not made. The Decrees of God select only the actual results, causes and effects, decisions, thoughts, considerations, and actual actions of every creature throughout history. In so knowing these events since eternity past, God in His control over history will place each individual into history at the proper time, and the exact time to produce those results.

What does that mean? You were born during this time of history, and this time of history is the best time for you to live in history. You were not born a century earlier, nor even a day later, but at exactly the right moment in time, such that you would have the parents you would have, the friends your would have, the education you would have, the career you would have, to do whatever it is you do in life, and at this time in history. God does not decide for you. He just knows in advance what you will or will not do throughout your life.

God does not make your life, you do. For example, God knows what you will have for breakfast tomorrow. He does not decide for you what you will have, you make that decision on your own. But God knew in eternity past what you would have. He also, in the greater picture of life, knows what you will contribute at any point in time - whether you will vote or not, whether you will invent something in history, etc. He knows your total contribution to history and the plan for the human race, as well as for yourself.

Some can look at this pessimistically and decide, 'Well, if God has already decided for me, then what is the point of my doing anything in life?' And that is a fools view of course. The better view is that since God has full knowledge of history, then He knows the outcome, therefore His promises for each one of us will come to pass with certainty, therefore better to trust in Him, than to have some ridiculous attitude in life.

Will evil win in history? No. All those terrorists will fail in the long run. Of course if the world turns negative and therefore against God in the collective spiritual sense of mankind, then we are in for a world of hurt - a world war, a depression, famine, etc. But there is always a spiritual awakening to end any and all miseries. Better to remain spiritually alert in your life, so that your life will be all the better.

The second thing we need to be aware of is that man is a known quantity. We were named by God, 'Adam', of the red earth, of the dust. And not only just dust, but worthless dust. Man was formed outside of the Garden, then brought into the Garden. We did not come from the dust of the Garden of Eden. We are worthless dust and beyond that existence we will never change. Man will not rise to any other higher level of life form. May look good in the movies, but will never happen in history, ever. Only God can elevate us to some higher plane. Man will never rise up out of this plane. We are still susceptible to viruses, regardless of medical advances. We will always die, regardless of life spans. Adam's generation lived over 900 years without medical technology or even vitamins. We can bearly get the average life span into the 80's, and we have far more technology today. Boast no more.

The third thing in this verse is that we have no wisdom of ourselves to dispute with God. He is infinitely greater. Everything we discover, God invented in eternity past. Every philosophy we invent, every religion we can come up with, is proof of our total stupidity. Man has worshipped animals, and trees, stars, and wind. Man has pursued investigation into our past and has come up with theories of our origins, which are in total disregard of God and the accounts we have in the Bible. Either the Bible is truth or it is not. Man even pursues his wealth or pleasures to a futile end, as we have just been studying.

There is gong to be nothing new under the sun, as Solomon has already stated. Nothing is going to take some strange turn in history, something that God forgot or did not consider. God does not error. Faith reaches out and believes, and as you grow up spiritually, your understanding and as you witness historical events, then your faith will increase as you realize the truths of life.
