Ecclesiastes 6:1-2

Lesson # Eccl. 6:1-2
Study Material - Eccl. 6:1-2

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Eccl. 6:1-2
1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun and it is prevalent among men-- 2 a man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor so that his soul lacks nothing of all that he desires, but God has not empowered him to eat from them, for a foreigner enjoys them. This is vanity and a severe affliction.

Solomon changes gears here a little bit. Before, he referred to an evil as a sick evil or a sort of depressing misfortune. Here the word for evil changes to a meaning of severe sickness or a malignant disease, 'holi ra'. A malignancy is something that is abnormal and life threatening. Anything that is not normal is not intended as the proper outcome as far as God is concerned.

Remember that this book, Ecclesiastes, is the book of human viewpoint. There are two views in this world - Gods view, and all other views. The 'all other views' are collectively categorized as human viewpoint for the purposes of this study. Human viewpoint is mans view of the world and life as he wants to see them. Man decides in his own heart, that he can do better than God. This can be either a proactive opinion where man is aggressive in the rejection of God, or a very subtle view, where man is just not interested in God. In any case, when Gods view is ignored, then human viewpoint is used.

Now we have the miser, a childless miser. Someone who accumulates throughout his life, neither using his accumulations for his own pleasure, but always seeks to accumulate more. There is never enough. But note also, that all 'things', be they riches, wealth, or honor, come from God. God is the source of all blessings.

The miser is blessed with the abundance's of this world, just as anyone alive may receive of the abundance's of this world. It is not uncommon for people to want more and more. They are never satisfied. The reason for their dissatisfaction is not from the 'things' they have, but from the state of their soul.

Their eyes are on things, Psa. 73:7. Their desires are for things, Psa. 17:14. Their focus on life is short sighted, Luke 12:19-20.

They spend their energies on seeking things for the body, as it were, and not the soul. Their desire is not for their health of soul, therefore they lack capacity for whatever they might have - be it little or great. Therefore, they lack enjoyment from what they do have.

Note also, that 'things' are not the source of ones failure in life. The attitude toward Gods Word, and consequently the lack of Gods Word in the soul, is the source for mans failure. No matter what God gives a person in life, even if He grants great riches, that person, if he lacks spiritual growth, will never enjoy them. He will die one day, possibly early in his life and someone else will take over his hard earned riches, and others will enjoy them.

Empowerment from God, comes through the advancement toward spiritual maturity. Spiritual maturity comes through the daily study of His Word, and residence in ones fellowship sphere. Apart from that spiritual growth and capacity for life, there is no true enjoyment from anything in life, except for mere transitory pleasures which fade into memories and then vanish at death. The latter is not true happiness

With spiritual growth, then you will have the capacity to enjoy whatever God graciously gives you in life - be it little or much. There is nothing wrong with being very wealthy. Likewise there is nothing disgraceful with having little in life. Gods plan for each one of us is for our best possible outcome in our spiritual life. Eternity is our objective, not an everlasting life here on earth. Our residence here is temporary. So the focus of our lives should be first on our spiritual growth, and after that everything else will fall into place naturally.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
