Ecclesiastes 3:6-8

Lesson # Eccl. 3:6-8
Study Material - Eccl. 3:6-8

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Eccl. 3:6-8

6 A time to search, and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep, and a time to throw away. 7 A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together; A time to be silent, and a time to speak. 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; A time for war, and a time for peace.

There is a time to search out the truth, or seek a higher guidance in life. There is a time to study in school for a test, or to learn a subject. There is a time to pursue your career, to better yourself, to improve yourself for the labor market and all its competitiveness. To search out a market for the possible results of a new product. To search out the enemy in times of conflict.

There is a time to lose, to withdraw when the flood waters are rising. You leave the home and preserve the family and life. Things can be replaced, rebuilt. Things are not worth losing ones life foolishly because things are not worth anything if you really look at them closely. What you accumulated once, you can accumulate again. There is a time to lose graciously when you are defeated in a competition, to lose out of courtesy when the younger opponent needs to gain confidence.

To tear apart in grieving as a heart tears apart at the loss of a loved one. For life is not without its termination. We are not exempt from the realities of life. We have all been born obviously, and we will all die at some point in our life. If we have any contact with people at all in our life, then grief will attend us at some point in time. The grief may not be death, but from the actions of a divorce, or a major accident where the outcome is not known for a period of time. Regardless of the source, grief is a very real emotion we all probably will face in our life.

Bit then there is the recovery. We cannot grieve forever. We need to close out the past and not wallow in it. Our life did not stop, but it needs to move forward. Though we may incur a loss of some type, we need to place it in perspective with all of life, with God, with our eternal future. A loved one will be seen again in heaven. Things lost are just things. The car you have today may be very near and dear to you, but in ten years it will be replaced more than likely with another. The car, the toys, etc., that you had twenty years ago, where are they today? Probably in storage, or perhaps they are long gone from this world. We always move on in our life. The toys of yesterday are not the toys of tomorrow. Do not enslave yourself to things, to friendships, such that you are unable to make decisions that would be better for your family

We are driving toward the concept of discernment in life for all of these appointments of time as Solomon spells them out. There are times for doing the right thing and for refraining from doing things, for speaking out when an opinion is necessary, for remaining silent when others will not listen no matter what you say. Christ was silent during His several trials. His hearers were not interested in what He had to say, but only in the expediency of getting this case out of their lives. Some people are not interested in the truth, because they have set their minds toward their own prejudices, or biases. Others may want advice and then you bed to give good advice. Others may be angry in their argument and all you can do is remain silent because they will not listen to you anyway, or until they settle down.

Love and hate, war and peace. Here love is the tolerance of others and their chosen way of life. You may not agree with them, but you need to learn to allow them to choose their own way, to make their own decisions and to fall on their face if necessary.

To hate is to have a policy of avoiding bad things, not the literal emotion of hating. That is a sin and we are not to sin. But we are to hold an attitude that is rigid, when necessary, against things that are wrong, just as we are to be flexible in legitimate things that are the rightful choice of others. To be inflexible in general is not a good attitude, however in things like the method of salvation we are inflexible and intolerant toward things like idol worship, or any of these religions that are anti-Jesus Christ. In much of the rest of life, we are to be tolerant as people make choices affecting themselves and/or their families

War is at times commissioned by God. If there is an aggressor then war is unavoidable, and a fight is the only recourse. If there is a means of solving a problem, then diplomacy may find a solution. Understanding your opponent is the best means of determining whether war or diplomacy is the solution. Many enemies play little mind games, and public opinion games in order to weaken the support of your leadership. The liberal press falls victim to these games as they become puppets to the unscrupulous acts and words of the enemy. How do you know when to talk and when to shoot? Wisdom and understanding is always the key. Politicians are probably the worst leaders ever to walk the face of the earth. Unfortunately they are in the positions of power to make the decisions for a nation. But God always has the over riding veto in all situations, and despite the weaknesses of a nation overall, the believers in that nation are its strength.

So we have covered the timing of many events that we all will face at some point in our lives. As we drive forward toward verse 19 and the jungle of life, we are reminded that despite all of these situations in life, if we do not have doctrine in our soul, then we are left with human viewpoint and its ups and downs in life.

Man cannot control all of the aspects of his life. Certainly the actions of others in this world cannot be controlled by us, and often not even anticipated. Events can be thrust upon us at a moments notice, or we can see them growing like a slow storm on the horizon.

I read an article in the paper the other day about some professor teaching of ones 'awareness' that is taught by the study of Buddha. It totally leaves out God in the picture and attempts to orient and reconcile man to his environment with the objective of attaining some sort of peace in the inner life. In contrast, now we have seen that man does not have any control over his life. Who among us made the decision to be born? None. When do we decide to die? None. Can we control the decisions of others? No. Can we control the weather? No. When you get right down to it, there is not much in life that we can control. And those things we think we have control over, well, God will sooner or later make it very well known that you don't control them either. So repeating a chant, humming in the corner, making the slow arms and feet motions of some sort of body routine, closing your eyes and thinking really, really hard to yourself, none of these will accomplish a spiritual awareness, none will give you any sort of spiritual strength, because they are completely detached from the realities of life.

Bible doctrine is the only source for learning reality and truth. Bible doctrine can only be learned when one has a human spirit in his being, because that human spirit is the mechanism of communicating and linking us with God. None one has a human spirit apart from that which is given to us by God, and God has rules for how He distributes a human spirit to mankind, and of course that is by means of our believing in Jesus Christ.

Discernment in all of these contrasts and events in life , which we have seen so far in this chapter, should tell us that there is a higher game in life, far beyond that which we can see. Far beyond that which we can control.

To choose against God we are no better off than the beasts in the jungle. All of life should teach us that there is a better way. We just need to recognize it and get with and continue our daily study program.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
