Eccl. 1:12-18

Lesson # Eccl. 1:12-18
Study Material - Eccl. 1:12-18

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Eccl. 1:12-18

12 I, the Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with. 14 I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind. 15 What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted. 16 I said to myself, 'Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.' 17 And I set my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly; I realized that this also is striving after wind. 18 Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.

The summary and brief evaluation of human knowledge. We have already seen the repetition of life that we cannot escape. We have seen that even our own life is short and we will, in our time, be gone just as all the generations before us have gone from this earth. So where have they gone? Where will we go? What is the certainty and security of knowing what lay ahead for us after our death?

Solomon gives us his perspective. He was king. Past tense. titles in this world are transitory. Whether we are rich or poor, titled or not, the end of our life treats us all the same. There is no privilege for one class of people over another when it comes to death. It consumes all without exception, without bias. Death is an extremely deep and hungry pit and it plays no favorites.

Solomon was king and was extremely wealthy. He had the tools, the resources, the authority to do anything he desired. He sought out knowledge. For by knowledge all things come into existence. Without knowledge any given thing does not exist. So Solomon determined that if things existed, then there was a foundation of knowledge behind each of them. Whether an item of philosophy, or something more tangible, there is always a basis to that thing. Granted that basis may be false, therefore the conclusion will follow that false premise, but still there is always thought of some kind behind everything in life. So where there is a thing, there is behind it knowledge, and one can learn that knowledge if one pursued a study in that chosen topic.

Solomon sought to seek out, to explore, to discover the truths in life. This is not an easy task. To learn requires intelligence, self discipline, and a commitment to study. To learn the things in life requires more from us mere humans, because we rely on our human abilities. We not have to study the details of any given subject, but we have to understand their applications and interrelationships within that subject and the relevancy to other subjects. Some subjects are easy, but as one advances in any given subject then technical terminology and technical concepts arise. To have the wit, the analytical abilities required, the common sense, the logic, and so forth gets to be very tedious, or can be if one advances far enough in any deep subject. You may understand basic math, but can you describe the mathematical relationships of the forces in play in the oceans and continents? So it is with all subjects as you advance into the deeper concepts of this universe. Even in literature. We can all read to some extent, but can we all write that great novel, that next best seller, that next big mega-movie hit? To do so requires great toil and strain.

Even as we learn more in life, we learn that there are things that we cannot change, no matter how we try. If something is designed to be crooked, then we cannot straighten it out, or visa versa. If we do not have the ability to learn , then we simply are not able to figure the subject out. If you cannot play the piano, or roller skate, then there is a time when you recognize it and you stop trying. Or at least you should come to that conclusion sooner or later. Likewise death is inevitable, but we are not able to cheat it. Death, from the human perspective, is unsolvable.

Solomon set his mind to learn. He learned a tremendous amount of knowledge in his life time. He learned from the masters of the world. He learned from the fools, the madmen, of the world. He was open to all sources of knowledge, and he desired to learn from whatever source that knowledge was made available.

But chasing the wind is useless, and chasing knowledge is useless, if you think that it will solve your problems in life. Don't misunderstand. Knowledge is useful if it is learned and applied and placed in its proper relationship with Bible doctrine. If God is ignored, then human knowledge is useless with respect to your eternal life. We cannot see the wind. So how can we pursue something that we cannot see. Likewise, knowledge has its unseen parameters. Only Bible doctrine reveals them. So how can one pursue something that has some hidden characteristics?

As we learn more, we learn there is even more to learn. As we solve one set of questions, we open the door to a dozen more sets of questions. With more knowledge, there can be associated with it, frustrations, more questions, uncertainties, wrong conclusions. Even with successes in life there are many failures.

Still the underlying issue is - what is the impact on the real you? Not just on your environment. Sure more tools, better foods, more concepts of health and diet, of invented items for making life more productive and convenient, all of these things and more may change your living environment in the world around you, but the real you is not outside of you, not your clothes, not your foods, not your home, not your car, or job, or ability, or titles. The real you is in your soul. What you think is what you are. And what you pursue in life determines where you will end up in life. And eternity is the destination for us all.

Therefore shouldn't we plan for our arrival in eternity, or should we ignore that and plan for our day to day existence in life here on earth. The fool chooses the latter. The smart person chooses both. A consistent program of Bible study will solve both time frames - now in time and our future in eternity. Or we can chase the wind and keep whatever we catch.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
