Dan. 12:5-7
5 Then I, Daniel, looked and behold, two others were standing, one on this bank of the river, and the other on that bank of the river. 6 And one said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, 'How long will it be until the end of these wonders?' 7 And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish shattering the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed.
Daniel saw two other angels standing on either side of the river. These are designated as simply two other angels. Others not previously seen. They are not identified, except for their standing positions on opposite banks of the river.
The river is generally represented as the continual flowing of history. Regardless of what empires exist at any given moment in history, history itself continues. The nations, and even people come and go. Time moves along, slowly, steadily, uninterrupted. Thus the slow moving river continues, regardless of mans thoughts, decisions, and actions in history.
This applies to each one of us. Regardless of what we think. Whether we are pro-Bible, or anti-Bible, or even apathetic-Bible (could care less), time continues. We are born and the day of our death advances upon us, and there is nothing we can do to change that.
The third angel who had been present throughout this vision, holds both hands and arms heavenward. A solemn oath in the name of He who lives forever, Jesus Christ, God Himself. Gods Word has absolute dominion over time, over history, over all that is. And regardless of whether you believe it or not. Our attitude will make no difference in the ultimate outcome of history. And even knowing the outcome, man will still forge ahead toward those foretold results.
The two banks are the present, and as the river flows past it, the present then, occurs only for the moment then is no more. We cannot hold what is. We cannot return to the past. Time continues to move forward.
History is heading toward a specific conclusion. The river here has been identified as the Tigris, a river currently passing through the Persian empire. But the identity of the river is given as, 'yor', for river or nile. This is not the nile of Egypt, but it is a reference to the deliverance that was once performed by God at the Exodus, and will be performed again in at the end of the Tribulation.
The Israelites were then in a hopeless and helpless situation. God delivered them. At the end of the Tribulation, they will again be in a hopeless and helpless situation.
' ... as soon as they finish shattering the power of the holy people.' This is a completed statement, or a statement of completion. People at that time (the end of the Tribulation) will be totally helpless to do for themselves. Their only possibility of escape will be the Second Advent of Christ - which will come. When that events occurs, their total helplessness, then these events will be concluded.
How long, is the question. How long until these events will run? In Dan. 9:27, we know that the anti-christ will establish himself in the temple in Jerusalem. This is the desecration which is often referred to in the Bible. This event occurs at the mid point of that last and final week of years in the dispensation of the Age of Israel. So for 3 1/2 years there will be the first half of the Tribulation. Lots of problems but no Armageddon.
Then there will be the final half of the Tribulation, which will be marked with tremendous violence against the believers and Jews of the world.. This will last again, 3 1/2 years. This is why Jesus said, Matt 24:15 'when you see the abomination of desolation', this will occur at the mid point of the Tribulation, then get out. Get to the mountains. Get away from society, from people, from government. Get away from any and all who will persecute you, because they will.
For 3 1/2 years people will have ample opportunity to get themselves organized and prepared to evacuate. Some who will read the signs of history early on in the Tribulation, will prepare themselves, and their families (they won't have any more kids, won't get their wives pregnant, won't do things that will cause themselves more burden, Matt 24:19 'But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babes in those days!'), and they will get out with time to spare.
Others will not see these events coming, and will get caught with their proverbial pants down. The onslaught will come rapidly. Satan will waste no time in his attempts to clear the decks of planet earth of all Jews and believers. Remember that Satan will have been evicted from heaven at that mid point of the Tribulation, and he will be in a panic to save himself from the lake of fire. History is quickly slipping through his fingers.
Now as for you and me. We won't face these types of events in our life time. Unless you travel to some third world country and get caught up in a revolt or get yourself kidnapped, or something like that, then you problems of life will be limited by comparison to the problems facing people in the Tribulation. They will have time to believe in Christ, learn Bible doctrine, and advance to spiritual maturity. So is stands to reason that we have an even greater opportunity to advance in our spiritual lives, and under much easier circumstances. Sure we have divorce, unemployment, handicaps, medical problems, natural disasters and the list goes on, but life goes on. Time does not stand still. if you spill some milk, then cry a little, clean it up and move on in your life. Think, and advance. You have options. You always have options in life. God never leaves you totally without options or ways out of problems. And He will reveal them to you, via your own thoughts or thinking abilities. Use your noggin and figure out what options you have. Continue in your Bible study, of course, for that is your best course to clearer thought, and therefore a better life.
Life will continue with or without you. So isn't it better to ride that wave of history with God at the helm, than to get lost in the waves?
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
