Dan. 9:24
24 'Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.
The message of the seventy weeks is finally given by Gabriel to Daniel. Seventy weeks of years have been ordered for the people of Israel. At the conclusion of those seventy weeks, their time will be completed.
Seventy is the quantity. Weeks, is 'shabua', which is a multiple of years given by the reference to weeks. That is it is a specific word for numbering years in seven's. This is not an interpretation but the actual translation and purpose of the word. There is no question in the time frame. These seventy weeks means 490 years. Why doesn't God just say, 'You have 490 years remaining'? He did in a way. This period will be broken up into several components.
Four hundred and ninety years are decreed for 'your' people, 'your' city. These are not the peoples of God (the spiritual life is not genetic) or the city of God (Jerusalem is the city of peace but the reality of peace comes from Bible doctrine not a geographical location), but is a reference to the nation of Judea and its occupants. They will continue as they are. They have the option of changing their ways certainly, everyone does. But they will not. Their days are numbered and the last of those days (the last seven years) especially will be filled with great grief.
The actual events to occur during these remaining years? To finish transgressions, end sin or seal sin, to make an atonement or covering over of the production of evil (iniquity), to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the prophets 'nabiy' or hose who are inspired, and to anoint the most holy place, are the key elements that will be concluded during this Age of Israel during which Daniel lives.
The 'finishing of transgression' is a reference to Israel and its historical disobedience to God. At the Second Advent God will bring to an end that transgression, that humiliation, and restore her to her promised lands, and bring her, the nation of Israel, into her glory as she was intended to have been, but failed to accomplish throughout her history. Israel chose, as all of mankind did, a path separate and apart from God.
'To put an end to sin', represents the placing an end to the destruction potential of sin. The wages of sin is death, but Christ went to the Cross and paid the price once and for all. Sin is sealed, set aside, finished. The subject of sin is no longer an issue with respect to history. That issue was replaced with faith in Christ. Man could not put away sin on his own, but man can choose very easily whether to believe in Christ or to reject Him. In sin we had no choice. In freedom from sin we now have a choice, and that choice need only be decided once in a person's life. We all have our entire lives to decide whether to believe in Christ, and we only need to make that momentary decision once for it to be permanent to our benefit. Once you believe you cannot undo that belief. You cannot turn back the clock and 'not believe', therefore there is eternal security in faith once expressed. There is nothing one can think or do to lose salvation - 'nothing'. Sin is concluded and salvation is available to all, and it is free. You cannot earn it or deserve it.
The 'atonement for sin' is a covering over of sin due to the work of Christ on the Cross. On the Day of Atonement, once per year, the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies twice and sprinkle blood from the sacrifice onto the mercy seat. The first time was for himself (no one can approach the Father apart from spiritual fellowship), the second time was for the people. This single day sacrifice was to atone for the accumulated sins of the people for the year. Christ accomplished this, among other things, on the Cross some 1972 years ago (assuming the Cross occurred in 30 AD). Fifty days later at Pentecost, the Church Age interrupted the Age of Israel with the giving of the Holy Spirit, and thus deferred this last of the seventy weeks which we are studying. Sixty nine weeks had been completed, or 483 years of the Age of Israel, up to that point.
'To bring in everlasting righteousness', here is reference to the bringing in of an everlasting age of righteousness. This is the millennial kingdom, the reign of Christ. This does not occur until all sins have been put away and covered over (the Cross). Righteousness will be the foundation on which the Millennium will be ruled.
'To seal up vision and prophecy', here prophecy is really prophets, or inspired ones. The prophecy of Israel and the covenant promises (the promises to Abraham and David) will be completed and fulfilled. To this current date in our time, these prophecies have not been fulfilled. The nation of Israel will be given the territory promised extending from the Nile to the Euphrates, and a descendant of David will sit on the throne for all of eternity. That dynasty will never end as did the dynasties presented in history in the dreams of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar. This prophecy is sealed with respect to its completion and it is set in history with respect that it is unchangeable. God has decreed this history, no man nor angel can change it.
'To anoint the most holy place', in the Millennium there will be a millennial Temple as described in Eze. chapters 41 - 46. Jesus Christ will be anointed in that site, the Lord of lords and King of kings as he formerly takes rule over planet earth specifically and the universe in general. The anointing of the most Holies is not a reference to the tearing away of the veil that separated the outer room, the Holy Place, from the inner room in the Tabernacle, the Holy of Holies or most Holy Place, but this will occur when Christ returns triumphant at the Second Advent.
These six things will be fully fulfilled during this 490 year time frame. The first three have been historic. Israel transgressed, and the Cross has become an historic event some 1972 years ago. The last three have not been accomplished yet which gives rise to the question as to what is going on here. These 490 years ended long ago. They would normally have ended in 37 AD, but they did not. Obviously history continues.
After Christ accomplished His work on the Cross and ascended to heaven and was glorified by being seated at the right hand of the Father, then there was need for a bride of the Crown Prince, and children, thus the need for a Royal Family, thus the Age of the Royal Family described by Paul throughout his books in the New Testament. So this Age of Israel was interrupted by our Age and will not be resumed until our Age is terminated at the Rapture.
The other kingdoms accomplished almost nothing in history. They spread out across the planet with one objective, and that as to satisfy their own desires.. This spreading out by aggressive nations will cease when Christ returns triumphant and destroys all nations on earth.
At that point in time all of the prophecies of the Age of Israel will be fulfilled, sealed, not hidden from sight, but concluded. So this is the over all time frame given to the nation of Israel. Seventy weeks of years, or 490 years.
Historically we can look back in time and see much of this history, but the last week mentioned in verse 27 has not yet occurred. This 490 year period has been interrupted at the 483rd year, leaving one week of years remaining in the Age of Israel., or seven years. We in our Church Age interrupted that dispensation with our un-revealed parenthetical dispensation. The length of which has not been disclosed.
We know the end of the time frame r at least the end of the 69th week which was the Cross. The question is what was the event that marked the beginning of these years. It can be known and was known, as certain Magi came a long way to find the Christ child, and in the very year of the birth of Christ.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
