Study Material - Dan. 8:26-27
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Dan. 8:26-27
26 'And the vision of the evenings and mornings Which has been told is true; But keep the vision secret, For it pertains to many days in the future.' 27 Then I, Daniel, was exhausted and sick for days. Then I got up again and carried on the king's business; but I was astounded at the vision, and there was none to explain it.
It might have been unthinkable that the temple would soon be rebuilt, then only to have its daily rituals of morning and evening sacrifices terminated by a ruthless king of the future.
A couple of statements are made here, 'keep the vision secret', 'it pertains to many days in the future', and 'there was none to explain it.'
These three all fit together in explaining this passage. Daniel did not keep the vision secret in the way you might think, that is, by not telling anyone. Obviously he wrote it down. But in the last verse we read that no one understood it. So therein is our meaning of keeping it secret. The scroll is seal so to speak. Anyone and certainly many heard the vision, but they did not understand. Or if they did, they would apply the meaning of the various rulers to the wrong people an to the wrong time frame in history.
For example. These events were actually going to span nearly 400 years, from the present time of Daniel to the time of Antiochus. Daniel would have known of the Persians. That nation was already beginning to test the borders of Babylon. Likewise with the Medes tot he North. But the Greeks were just beginning to evolve. The Persian Empire would rise and fall, then the Greek Empire would rise and split, then the Macedonian Empire would rise begin approaching its fall. At that time, the light of the vision would fall more clearly.
Further, Daniel could have ascribed the leadership of the Greeks to the present leadership, Croesus. Croesus had subdued all the Greek cities in Asia Minor. To Daniel, Croesus not Alexander the Great, would have been the logical leader from Greece. Except for the statement 'for many days', which propelled the events into the future, thought the time was not specified.
We have the same difficulty in understanding in our current time. When we near the end of our Church Age, there will arise ten nations, the anti-christ, the Tribulation, and so forth. We obviously look to the European nations for this group of ten, and we could possibly be right, but when that time occurs, that anti-christ will have tremendous power. In our resent day, we know of the tremendous technology that we have in our US military, what with smart bombs, stealth planes and so forth. For another to somehow seize control over this technology and control it, would mean that something disastrous will happen to our country in the future. Something disastrous, which would result in the turning over of this power to another. We know that this little horn, the eleventh horn, will grow up out of insignificance and seize power from three of the existing ten. That could mean that the USA is not a part of these eleven horns and if so then something will happen to relegate us to a non-power or a lessor power in the world. Or we could be that eleventh horn raised up out of our insignificant status in our revolt from Britain a couple of hundred years ago. Either way we are a player or we are not. If not, then something will push us out of our world leadership position. When? Perhaps in the next hundred years. Who knows.
So what does this all have to do with Daniel. The information is made known, yet it is sealed up until the proper time for its revelation. Daniel's vision was not know until the time of Antiochus. Our understanding is probably flawed, since we have already studied that God will not reveal the anti-christ until that restraint (the Holy Spirit, and therefore the Royal Family) have been removed from the world. Perhaps the rapture will be the undoing of the USA politically and militarily. Those who remain after the Rapture will have their eyes opened and they will understand. That is those who ultimately believe in Christ. Unbelievers who are negative will never come to an understanding. So then, there is our parallel to our current day from Daniel's day.
What did Daniel do. He went back to work and resumed his eight to five job. He was astonished that no one understood. When God chooses to reveal a thing, then it is understood. When God chooses to prevent understanding, then no amount of guesswork, no speculation will even accidentally stumble on the answers.
We like to read of the future. It is kind of cool. We like to speculate and even visualize various scenarios. Makes for great Hollywood style stuff, books, end of the world stories and so forth. But we are not to become overly consumed by the end times projections and predictions. No selling off all your assets. No putting on white sheets and going to the highest hill and waiting for Christ to arrive by 7 pm. All that nonsense comes out of kooky cult groups.
Our responsibility in life is to study our Bible daily, reside in fellowship, apply what we learn to our daily lives, understand the realities of life, go to work ..... pay our bills, take care of our families, in short continue to be responsible in life. God will take care of the historical stuff. We need to take care of our soul first, our family, and so forth. We do not sit on the porch and do nothing 'because God will take care of it'. We will learn quickly that God will hammer us in discipline if we get a lazy attitude.
Things will happen in history and there is nothing we can do to prevent overall history from happening. We cannot control the rest of the world. But we can affect our own destiny through maintaining our daily Bible study, and therefore enhance our own present life, and eternal future. So we ponder what we learn, drink one last cool one, then go to bed and get up tomorrow and go to work and resume and continue our normal life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
