Dan. 7:1

1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it.

The first six chapters of Daniel are historical and therefore we have a general account of His life. Daniel was faithful to God throughout his life. He was faithful to his studies and to the application of doctrine to his daily routine. This gave him a phenomenal spiritual growth and spiritual muscle with which to meet the various crises of his life. Problems were not withheld from him, after all he was a captive of a foreign nation for all of his adult life, and he had many social and political enemies who would see him destroyed if they could. That is really a good description of our individual lives.

We too are captives of this foreign planet. Our real home is in heaven and we are here temporarily. Too we have enemies who would see us destroyed in some manner. Perhaps we do not have so dramatic a life as Daniel, but his life demonstrates the pattern of our lives. We either abide in Gods plan for our life and thus will be recipients of His blessings, protections and so forth, or we can ignore God in our lives and be subject to the violence of the jungle.

Now we have extensive prophecy, beginning in chapter 7. Jesus Christ controls history. He knows all of history since the beginning of time, therefore He has the ability to foresee all that will occur in the future. Gods statements of future historical events are as certain as to their occurrence as though they had already occurred in the past. In fact they did occur in the divine decrees when God settled on the events in history in eternity past.

We saw the example of Daniel's behavior in his life, now we have certain events of future occurrence (all from Daniel's perspective, and still some remain from our perspective). Daniel has already seen during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, the vision of the statue, through Nebuchadnezzar. This was the vision of the empires of future times.

Now the vision takes different twist. It comes to Daniel and not through the king, Belshazzar. Nebuchadnezzar was blessed in being selected to receive the former dream. Belshazzar was not so blessed. And the vision came in the first year of the reign of Belshazzar, as we are told here.

Belshazzar's name is herein spelled differently. Before it was Bel-she-azar-Bel, which is 'he that treasures up riches'. Now this is Bel-eshe-zar-Bel which means 'on fire by the enemy'. Bel was the god of the Chaldeans. He had prospered once under the former leadership and guidance of God, but is now to be consumed.

Daniel wrote the dream down after it had come to him while he lay down in his bed. Daniel was relaxed while in bed, or at least that is generally the place we relate peace and quiet and rest for ourselves.

Daniel wrote down the visions because there should be no reason or excuse for anyone to misinterpret their meaning. But of course the Jewish race and leadership in general and mostly in whole, made consistent mistakes in their interpretations of prophecy. They were looking for a deliverer to come and restore their nation of Israel to its former greatness as it was under Solomon. That was not to be.

But too, at the same time, the entire human race has drawn wrong conclusions with respect to God and prophecy. Man has turned to technology, human theory, human philosophy, liberal politics and such in its pursuit for illusive truth. And of course man will never find the truth in his own wisdom.

Israel would never be a nation again in the sense it was under Solomon or David until the Second Advent of Christ. Make no mistake. The greater portion of Jewish peoples are not in the Middle East in our present day. They are scattered throughout the world. Probably mostly in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, etc. The present day Israel is not the regathered Israel of prophecy, which will not occur until the Second Advent.

The present dream reinforces the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, but will add to it, in that the prophecy will continue through to the Second Advent where a glorified Christ (glory came subsequent to the Cross) will return and establish His kingdom. Chronologically, the Cross (the judgment of sin and the association of Christ with our sins), the indignities, will come before the glory of being seated at the right hand of the Father. The Ancient of Days if Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Prophecy does not give us spiritual growth per se, but it does contribute to the credibility of Gods Word and therefore should reinforce out faith in the truth contained within Gods Word. Daniel will be writing about events future from his day. Most of them have occurred. There remains but one empire to rise up in our future. The stage will be set sooner or later for the formation of this next great empire, but it will not come into being until after the Rapture of the Church. And then it will form rapidly.
