Dan. 6:6-10
6 Then these commissioners and satraps came by agreement to the king and spoke to him as follows: 'King Darius, live forever! 7 'All the commissioners of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the high officials and the governors have consulted together that the king should establish a statute and enforce an injunction that anyone who makes a petition to any god or man besides you, O king, for thirty days, shall be cast into the lions' den. 8 'Now, O king, establish the injunction and sign the document so that it may not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.' 9 Therefore King Darius signed the document, that is, the injunction. 10 Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.
Greed and treachery lurk everywhere, especially when there are issues of power, ego, and various forms of lust involved. Daniel is successful. Daniel has a position desired by others. They desire it because it is a high profile position and one with power. It is in the eyes of the king and therefore those who are jealous of Daniel want it.
Positions in life do not necessarily have to be of high rank in order to be desired by others. Many a social club suffers from people with large ego's, competing for the powers and attention that the club offers. The same inordinate competition exists in the office place, in town bureaucracies, in business, anywhere people come together. So if you have any contact with people whatsoever, and if your have even a shirt on your back, then someone will either envy you or despise you. Luck you!!!
If society were honest and fair, then competitiveness would not be necessary. People would be able to come and go as they please, do their jobs or activities, and not be bothered by others. But the jungle does not sponsor fairness in life. It promotes the satisfaction of the sin nature, and the sin nature is never satisfied. Furthermore, the sin nature will connive in order to gain its desired end. If someone is unapproachable, then the rules are changed, even twisted and distorted in order to make legitimate that which would be otherwise wrong.
And so enter the conspirators. They work at their plan. Now where did we study that before? They contrive deceit against Daniel, and even against the king, whom they seek their pleasure from. They imply that 'all' the leadership has come together to draft this new law. This includes the implication of Daniel's agreement with the new law. This is of course a lie. So their first fault is their conspiracy of planning the new law, and their second fault is in lying to the king and in deceiving him as to their real purpose of the law. They sought not to promote faith in their gods, or the king, but to destroy Daniel.
Now in our day and age, this practice has not really changed. Politics, even business competitors, or workers who compete for the rewards of promotion, all can be caught up in simple or complex plans of deceit. This is why, if you are hearing some promo by some group or subordinate, then you need to examine all of the facts and other perspectives before you decide or come to some conclusion regarding some 'thing' for which you might be responsible.
It is very easy to hear the popular opinion and then to give in to it, in order to expedite an issue. But the decision might be the wrong decision and terrible results might occur. The king did not investigate the matter, but took the word of those he trusted. You can make big mistakes in life too. So he says that he loves you, and just wants to be sure 'before' you get married, so that neither of you will be making a mistake. Right!!! Don't be blond. Tell him to take a hike, or a really cold shower and then grow up. Next!
National leaders might jump into political land mines if they do not investigate matters thoroughly before making decisions. Of course opponents will accuse them of dragging their feet, but who cares as long as a process of investigation or evaluation is under way. If the public is smart, they will ignore the rhetoric. If the public is not so smart, then the nation is in trouble so don't give in to speeding the trouble along more quickly.
Darius failed in this. He did not see the envy from within his own subordinates. Such a sweeping law would have great implications - death for anyone who violated it. Death or execution is generally considered a major topic of concern for most folks, and it should not be taken lightly.
Daniel was unaware of the plot until it was too late, but he did not change his pattern of life though now he would be in violation of the law, human law. Typically the Bible teaches us to obey the laws of the land so long as they are compatible with Gods laws, and even in this people get things all screwed up. They become subjective and anything they don't like becomes (within their minds) against Gods law, so they can justify anything they wish. Don't pay taxes, don't dance or sell liquor or even do business on Sunday (you know the Sabbath rest thing). There are always going to be screwballs out there in the world.
But here the legitimate worship of God is outlawed and is clearly a bad law. Daniel did not stop his daily worship. Notice that he activities with regard to God were daily. Daniel did not interfere with anyone else's life, nor try to force his beliefs on them. But there were peeping toms out there who were gathering evidence against Daniel. They not only conspire to write laws that are illegitimate, but they invade the privacy of others in order to convict them. And such is the plot against Daniel.
Daniel's worship is mentioned as being three times daily. Not due to the concept of the trinity, but because this is his daily habit. His Bible study was ingrained in his daily activities. He loved God and doctrine. They meant more to him than life itself. Something many of us need to think about when we look into the mirror of the Word of God and see our life. How deep is our resolve in Bible study, or is it a mere footnote to our life. Something that we would have to really look for in order to find.
Evil people will stop at nothing and place anyone and everyone in jeopardy just to gain their objective. Something that we all need to consider when considering the major issues of the nation as well as issues in our individual lives.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
