Dan. 4:4-7
4 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace. 5 'I saw a dream and it made me fearful; and these fantasies as I lay on my bed and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. 6 'So I gave orders to bring into my presence all the wise men of Babylon, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 7 'Then the magicians, the conjurers, the Chaldeans, and the diviners came in, and I related the dream to them; but they could not make its interpretation known to me.
Nebuchadnezzar is now at rest in his home, his palace I Babylon. This account begins about the 34th or 35th year of his reign. He had just completed his conquest of Egypt, the last of his campaigns, and was now at ease in his home with little more to be accomplished for the empire.
His prosperity was at its maximum. Hs accomplishments placed him at the pinnacle of his career. Surrounded with prosperity, great wealth, and pleasure, he is now ready for a rest. Sort of a retirement with nothing to do. Before all of this his mind was racing with battle plans for campaigns. His mind was filled with matters of state and arrangements for the administration of all the conquered territories. But even throughout all of this he still received warnings, and information concerning God, which he ignored as unimportant. For thirty plus years he has had his way. He rolled over nation after nation. There was nothing that could stop him.
His pride and arrogance, with regard to his accomplishments, grew in his mind. He had done all of this by himself, by the brilliance of his own thinking and effort. He was the King, and King over many conquered nations. He could do what he wanted, when he wanted. He was invincible. What power was there that was greater? Who had accomplished more than he in the past?
Yet with all this power and wealth, a simple dream terrified him. If a person has lots of money and resources to engage in battle with adversaries, then a certain amount of confidence is obtained from those resources. But they are resources that help one engage in adversarial events. The world provides many adversaries both without ones person and within ones mind. Money may help you win in court or on the battlefield, temporarily, but time ones state of mind eventually deteriorates ones resources and accomplishes ones defeat. Victories in life, in the jungle are temporary at best, and always result in defeat in death. What we really need to focus on is victory in life that results in victory in death, such that our eternal state will be beyond wonderful.
If you are racing through life fighting in divorce, fighting in business, fighting just to survive from one pay check to the next, then your focus is distracted with all of these activities. You are consumed with loneliness, with anger, with your drive to win or advance in some fashion, and you are missing the entire point of life. At some point God will hit you from the blind side, and when you are out of fellowship for a prolonged period of time, all sides around you make you blind to life.
Nebuchadnezzar had a dream and it terrified him. Terror belongs on the battlefield, on a beach assault with bullets flying all around, in captivity when you are at the mercy of your captors. But in bed, in the safety of ones home, surrounded by all the wealth in the world, with servants waiting on you hand and foot? This is not a place for fear. However, when you have no Bible resources in the soul, then your soul is vulnerable to all the possible attacks that the world can launch against it. Even the simplest things in life will drive you to paranoia. You'll worry, you'll fret about anything and everything. You'll wonder what life is all about. You'll sit by your window, alone, drink in hand, on a Friday night. You'll cry in your privacy with no one to hear. You may be surrounded by the finest home, or a the dingiest of apartments. Your environment is irrelevant. Your state of mind is the key to your life, not what you have or don't have, or might lose.
You can go to friends and ask their advice. Nebuchadnezzar called all his counsels, the most knowledgeable men available and they had no answers, even to this simple dream. They could have even made something up, but they could not even accomplish that.
Dreams are really just images you form in your mind, just a thinking process, and you do all that yourself. Dreams cannot harm you. A dream cannot take out a knife and stab you. It cannot grab you by the neck and throw you down. The search for the meaning of a dream cannot be found in this world, if there is a true meaning at all. Man cannot conjure up an arbitrary meaning that might be convenient and acceptable, but will only serve to mislead those who listen. We have read stories of those who have seen images or shadows of Christ, or shrouds, or such other things they interpret as signs, but if you have even an ounce (or gram as the case may be) of doctrine in your soul, then you know that these things are false. Why? Because in this Church Age, Christ will not make any manifestations of himself until the Rapture, and even then He will only descend into the clouds to call up all believers from this Church Age. In our Church Age, the written word is Gods manifestation to us, and that is all. No visions, no dreams, no angels appearing. That all ended in 96 AD when John wrote the final book of the Bible. Now we have the completed cannon of scripture, and that is our source of spiritual food for growth and guidance.
We will not find answers in astrology, in cards, in little game boards, in the tossing of bones. We will not find answers in science, in genetic research, in advanced math, on the moon, or a bottle of booze. Nebuchadnezzar had the information given to him throughout his reign, but he ignored it. Most of us today do the same thing. We find excuses for avoiding a commitment to a daily Bible study program. We have to read our news stand rag papers, we have to tend to the kids, we have to go to work, we have a headache. Whatever the reason, we do it to ourselves and we deserve what comes against us. Continue making the wrong decisions and you will get what you deserve. Don't mistake any prosperity as your due reward, it is only a tease to show you what you will lose when the hammer will finally drop on your life. And when God swings it, recovery is extremely painful.
Nebuchadnezzar will suffer for seven plus years. Most of us don't like suffering for more than a few hours when we get sick, but the reality of rejecting Bible doctrine is that you embrace that jungle out there in the world, and you expose yourself to all that it can throw at you, both external and internal miseries.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
