Dan. 1:9-14
9 Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials, 10 and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.' 11 But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 'Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 'Then let our appearance be observed in your presence, and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king's choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.' 14 So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.
God knew way ahead of time the where and when of Daniel's predicament. He knew also the nature of the overseer who would be assigned to Daniel and his friends, and to who, their care would be entrusted. The compassion was a gift from God and not due to the good personality or friendship winning abilities of Daniel. So here we have a point of doctrine concerning our situations in life. God assigns friends as well as enemies to your life. Friends are your good fortune and a blessing, especially if they are good and loyal friends. Enemies, are there to keep you on your toes and alert so to speak. People may become your enemies for no reason. You may not even know them. They may be people who are competitive with you at work or even socially. They may be people who are jealous to the point of hate, or they may just be people who have a bad attitude in life. Whatever the reason, do not rebel against them. Place their care in Gods hands and sit back and watch how God deals with them. Don't regard their stories against you. Remember 'sticks and stones...'.
Here Daniel has a situation where he has been selected because he primarily is a good looking young man - no blemishes. And too, he is smart. The same with his friends. But their predicament is related to doctrine and their attitude toward the doctrinal rituals they have learned and wish to retain. Daniel knows that food for the body is not the issue. He makes a request of the overseer to test him for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water, and then leaves the decision up to the overseer as to what their diet would be. The overseer could have decided against the vegetables and required them to eat the meat and wine, and Daniel and his friends would have complied. Why?
Later we will have a test of lions and fire. A test that actually brings them to the brink of their deaths. But that test was an outright command to reject God, which they refused. This test over food, was merely a diet issue and nothing more. They were not asked to reject God, in this case. But they did request the opportunity to retain their rituals in diet as a part of their remembering the doctrines they already knew.
The overseer feared the king more than God, but despite this fear, he allowed the ten day test. After all they had a three year study program before them. So there was plenty of time to recover if they became weak from this vegetable diet.
Now the issue of physical food in our present day has nothing to do with spirituality or Bible study. Our proper food for the soul is Bible doctrine, and that is information funneled through our soul by means of a consistent program of daily study. Whether you choose to eat vegetables or fish or meat of some kind, is a matter of your personal preference and taste. But that decision concerning your diet should have no bearing on your spiritual life. You are not more or less spiritual because you choose to eat one food verses another. Food for the body is irrelevant in the spiritual life. If you have to watch your diet for some health reason, then of course that is just being responsible in your physical health, but physical food should not be used as a tool to convince others or even yourself that it is necessary to grow up spiritually.
Also, don't get the idea that this is some sort of secret ten day broccoli diet to a better looking you!! Whether you are pretty or not so pretty, makes no difference in your spiritual life. God looks on the soul and therein lies the true beauty of a person. The world looks on the outward appearance, which can be deceiving and often is. So there is even hope for my siblings scattered around out there in this world. I of course prefer mushrooms on top of a T-bone.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
