Revelation 3:12

DailyBibleStudy.Org

12 Him [autos] that overcometh [nikao] will I make [poieo] a pillar [stulos] in [en] the temple [naos] of my [mou] God, [theos] and [kai] he shall go [exerchomai] no [ou me] more [eti] out: [exo] and [kai] I will write [grapho] upon [epi] him [autos] the name [onoma] of my [mou] God, [theos] and [kai] the name [onoma] of the city [polis] of my [mou] God, [theos] which is [ho] new [kainos] Jerusalem, [Hierousalem] which [ho] cometh down [katabaino] [katabaino] out of [ek] heaven [ouranos] from [apo] my [mou] God: [theos] and [kai] I will write upon him my [mou] new [kainos] name. [onoma]    KJV-Interlinear

12 'He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.    NASB

To overcome, ‘nikao,’ means to conquer, prevail, to accomplish a long hard fought victory.  This is a sequential or chronological accomplishment and not a momentary single event, but a series.  In the previous letters to the churches (except for one), this generally referred to the believer who was successful in attaining spiritual maturity, and staying there.  That is the same connotation used here.

And so again to the spiritually mature Christian, there is now listed four promises or rewards.  You should note by this time, that these promises of reward, are not offered to Christians who do not ‘overcome.’But only to those who persevere, in obedience, to Gods mandate to grow up to spiritual maturity and remain there.

God will make the mature believer a pillar in the temple. The temple is the one and only temple wherein worship functions. Your temple resides within your soul.  And what you make of your temple depends on your attitude toward your daily Bible study.

The pillar represents stability or permanence, and strength. In the front of the Temple were two pillars named Jachin (he will establish), permanent, and Boaz (in him is strength), strength. These names will apply to the believer who attains spiritual maturity. Spiritual maturity means doctrine in the soul, understanding and wisdom, and from that comes a stability and permanence and strength in life.

Those who do not grow up, do not have stability, nor do they have spiritual strength.   Only mature believers possess that.

The mature believer who maintains his mature status, shall never lose it, even in eternity.  With Christ (doctrine) in you, then you will never lose your spiritual growth and faith and mature status.  Note, that if you go negative, then you can lose this status. However, our context here is the believer who overcomes, which is the positive believer, who will never stray from his daily studies.  The believer who really wants to learn doctrine and grow to the maximum in their spiritual life.

To write on him, the name of God, indicates ownership. And this is yet another promise that is conveyed to believers that have an understanding, and that is, that believers will always belong to God, and there will never be a time when they do not.

For mature or positive believers this will have an important significance. For immature believers, this will not carry much meaning as they lack spiritual perspective and a frame of reference to understand and appreciate it.  This is why many immature believers have doubts, are afraid, feel insecure, and so forth.

There will be a new name for Jerusalem, as noted in Ezek 48:35 (Shammah), ‘the Lord if there,’ and in Jer. 33:16 (Jehovah Tsidkenu), ‘the Lord our Righteousness.’

Ezek 48:35

35 "The city shall be 18,000 cubits round about; and the name of the city from that day shall be, 'The Lord is there.'"   NASB

Jer 33:16

16 'In those days Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she shall be called: the Lord is our righteousness.'    NASB

The new Jerusalem is the true home of the family of God, while the earthly Jerusalem, is the home of many who do not even recognize God.The earthly Jerusalem will one day be destroyed, while the new Jerusalem will exist in eternity forever.

The new Jerusalem will come down out of heaven in the new universe, Rev. 21, and certainly does not mean any earthly rebuilt city.

So, within the mature believer, Christ is there, and righteousness is his foundation.  This is doctrine within your soul, doctrine entrenched and permanent within your soul.

And finally, Jesus Christ will write His own new name, on the mature believer.

Rev 19:12

12 And His eyes are a flame of fire, and upon His head are many diadems; and He has a name written upon Him which no one knows except Himself.    NASB

This name no one knows.

The passage is a promise that when Christ makes us completely His own by writing His own new name on us, He will admit us into his full glory, which is at present incomprehensible to us.  This is probably the most phenomenal gift or reward that can possibly be given to any believer.  The magnitude of which is far beyond our comprehension.Even as the wisdom of God is beyond vastness, so this promise is beyond the infinite.

And to think, all of these things are going to someday, be very real. This is not a children’s story, but a very real destiny for those who take the Bible seriously, who take their daily studies seriously, and who pursue theirspiritual life as God intends for them to do.
