Lesson # Phil. 2:9-11
Study Material - Phil. 2:9-11

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Phil. 2:9-11

9 Wherefore [dio] God [theos] also [kai] hath highly exalted [huperupsoo] him [autos], and [kai] given [charizomai] him [autos] a name [onoma] which [ho] is above [huper] every [pas] name [onoma]:
10 That [hina] at [en] the name [onoma] of Jesus [Iesous] every [pas] knee [gonu] should bow [kampto], of things in heaven [epouranios], and [kai] things in earth [epigeios], and [kai] things under the earth [katachthonios];
11 And [kai] that every [pas] tongue [glossa] should confess [exomologeo] that [hoti] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos] is Lord [kurios], to [eis] the glory [doxa] of God [theos] the Father [pater]. KJV-Interlinear

9 Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. NASB

God the Father exalted Jesus Christ, but not just His deity, but His whole person. The man as well as the Son of God. As God, Christ is already exalted. He has the same characteristics as the Father and the Spirit. They all three are co-equal and co-eternal, but only one of the three became man and that was Jesus Christ. He was not exalted because of His humanity. He was not exalted because of His deity. He was exalted because of the 'therefore' statement in this verse. Therefore what? All of the verses preceding this 9th verse. Having this 'attitude', doctrine in the soul. The same attitude that we are commanded to have.

Because Christ learned Bible doctrine, because He applied Bible doctrine to His daily life, because He lived inside the fellowship sphere of the Holy Spirit, relying on the power of the Spirit rather than His own divine power, having 'set aside His own power', verse 7. Because He obeyed the commands of God during the course of His first advent here on earth. These are the reasons for His being exalted, and exalted above every name every creature, living or dead, in heaven or on earth. Heaven and earth are separately stated because heaven is separate and apart from this universe. Heaven is not inside this universe, and Jesus Christ has been given authority, not just on this planet earth, not just things under this earth (the dead), not just in this universe, but throughout heaven as well. His kingdom is not limited by geography, not limited by physical concepts, not limited by known science, but it encompasses everything in existence and all levels of life. The kingdom of Christ is beyond our comprehension as is His power and authority.

So much so, that if the facts were known and understood, every knee should bow at the name of Jesus. Most do not know nor understand the magnitude of Christ or God, or doctrine for that matter. People live their lives oblivious to the things of the spiritual world. Mostly disinterested, because , well Bible doctrine is just not 'entertaining' enough, like a good adventure book. But actually it is the greatest adventure ever. In fact it is really a true story which we have the opportunity to live first hand. Most people miss out on the adventure, however.

That every tongue should confess means simply that. Every language on this earth, and in the history of the human race, has words and stories for God and the Son of God. No one who has ever lived has an excuse for not knowing of God or salvation. And the fact that one day every one in heaven of every tongue will acknowledge Christ as Lord, is to the Glory of the God the Father, and that is the whole purpose of life. To Glorify God the Father. What about Jesus Christ?? Compare John 5:23 and Matt. 10:40. We are commanded to worship the Son, and in so doing we worship the Father as well. The Father receives the Son as He receives us, but we receive the Son too in our faith, and in so doing we receive the Father. Our point of reference is Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen the Father, but we see Him through the Son, so in effect we do see God the Father by see the Son through doctrine.

Now lets not lose track of the passage. We are commanded to follow the same course in our lives as Jesus followed. That course is Bible doctrine resident in the soul, with our spiritual status resident in fellowship with God and therefore under the control of the Holy Spirit, and applying what doctrine we know to our daily lives, in order to be made complete in our soul here on this earth.

By accomplishing this, we too will be honored and exalted in heaven, and that recognition is far beyond anything we can imagine. Too, we need to realize that it is not we who are making this accomplishment, but God working in us, therefore God gets all the credit and glory, not us. We receive the blessing of His work.
