Lesson # Phil. 2:1d-2
Study Material - Phil. 2:1d-2
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Phil. 2:1d-2
1 If there be therefore [oun] any [ei tis] consolation [paraklesis] in [en] Christ [Christos], if any [ei tis] comfort [paramuthion] of love [agape], if any [ei tis] fellowship [koinonia] of the Spirit [pneuma], if any [ei tis] bowels [splagchnon] and [kai] mercies [oiktirmos], 2 Fulfil ye [pleroo] my [mou] joy [chara], that [hina] ye be likeminded [autos] [phroneo], having [echo] the same [autos] love [agape], being of one accord [sumpsuchos], of one [heis] mind [phroneo]. KJV-Interlinear 1 If therefore there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. NASB
'If any affection and compassion', are applications of Bible doctrine to ones life. Paul has summarized the entire realm of doctrine, its objective and result, in these few words in verse 1 and 2. Any affection and compassion means how you treat others or how you look at life in general.
First you believe in Christ. Without salvation, you have no human spirit, no rebirth, no possible relationship with God. Once saved, then you have to grow up, learn Gods wisdom. Of course in this world when we grow up we learn reading, writing, and arithmetic, etc. This is academic information for your career, or just getting by in life. But no amount of academic learning can gain you eternal life. Academic learning is also limited to your ability to learn, limited to your IQ, your resources perhaps, limited to the schools you attend, etc. Life in this world is certainly not fair, and not equal.
Life in the spiritual realm is equal to all, however, because God does the communication through your human spirit and into your soul. The doctrine invigorates your soul and gives it health, and muscle, and understanding. Your application of what you learn gives you growth and furnishes your soul with the wealth of things that are eternal in nature and not limited by the deterioration of this world.
The world is selfish, but doctrine promotes compassion and understanding. And more than that, it brings a completeness to your life, spiritual maturity. That is the joy here referred to by Paul. The relaxed mental attitude, the adjustment to life, the orientation to reality, orientation to doctrine. This is the complete understanding of the why's of life. Why do things happen the way they do. Why is there oppression. Why do people act the way they do, and so forth.
We are of the same mind, the mind of Christ, Bible doctrine. Doctrine provides believers the same reference material for life. Such that we can all discern and understand and treat each other in accordance with the will of God, in the proper fashion.
One love, attitude toward others, orientation toward others and life in general. One spirit, the fellowship of God, which places us all in the sphere of Gods palace, and under His control and protection. The same policy, never changing, always dependable and trustworthy. No surprises, no sudden policy changes that take some by surprise and leave them out in the cold. No unfair treatments that favor the few and screw the masses.
One purpose. God will. A policy of grace. A policy of fairness. A policy that gives each of us the chance to be a winner, not just a few. The world has few who have much and by far the vast majority who have little in life. The world is full of the very poor, and the rich, and the rest in between. But in the spiritual life, we each have equal opportunity to advance to spiritual maturity and tremendous blessing.
The more we are consistent in our studies, by learning regularly and daily. The more we apply doctrine to our lives, by remaining in fellowship and by applying doctrine to our daily activities, then the more our spiritual growth will accelerate toward maturity and completeness in our lives.
God does not have multiple purposes in His policy. He does not have one purpose for you and another for me. He treated Adam the same as He treats you and I. God is immutable, never changing. His policy is immutable, never changing. The salvation mechanics, the spiritual growth mechanics, the fellowship mechanics have never changed. They were the same for the Old Testament believers, just as they are the same for each of us today.
Many religions in this world have as many rituals, many requirements for membership in their organizations, and if you do not follow their rules, then you are out. Some even go so far as to threaten your expulsion from heaven. And of course that is nonsense. No one on earth, no organization on earth, no creature in this universe has the authority or even the power to determine who will or will not go to heaven. God makes that determination alone. Man makes up the most ridiculous rules in order to control his fellow man, and most of these rules are arbitrary and subject to change depending on who in charge.
God has been in charge from eternity past and is still in charge, though most do not recognize this. God has not changed and has been consistent in everything He does since eternity past. He treated the angels the same as He does us. In the beginning was the word and the word was God. The beginning refers to eternity past, even before the creation of the angels.
So Paul summarizes. One salvation. One doctrine. One attitude. One fellowship. One application to life. One maturity or completeness, which is our objective in the spiritual life. One purpose, which is Gods purpose and is explained to us through these scriptures.
