You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Phil. 1:27-30
27 Only [monon] let your conversation be [politeuomai] as it becometh [axios] the gospel [euaggelion] of Christ [Christos]: that [hina] whether [eite] I come [erchomai] and [kai] see [eido] you [humas], or [eite] else be absent [apeimi], I may hear [akouo] of your [humon] affairs [peri], that [hoti] ye stand fast [steko] in [en] one [heis] spirit [pneuma], with one [mia] mind [psuche] striving together [sunathleo] for the faith [pistis] of the gospel [euaggelion]; 28 And [kai] in [en] nothing [medeis] [me] terrified [pturo] by [hupo] your adversaries [antikeimai]: which [hostis] is [esti] to them [autos] [men] an evident token [endeixis] of perdition [apoleia], but [de] to you [humin] of salvation [soteria], and [kai] that [touto] of [apo] God [theos]. 29 For [hoti] unto you [humin] it is given [charizomai] in the behalf [huper] of Christ [Christos], not [ou] only [monon] to believe [pisteuo] on [eis] him [autos], but [alla] also [kai] to suffer [pascho] for [huper] his sake [autos] [huper]; 30 Having [echo] the same [autos] conflict [agon] which [hoios] ye saw [eido] [eido] in [en] me [emoi], and [kai] now [nun] hear [akouo] to be in [en] me [emoi]. KJV-Interlinear 27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28 in no way alarmed by your opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. 29 For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. NASB
Paul concludes this first chapter with an exhortation not only to the Philippians but to all believers, as to how we should conduct ourselves in our daily lives. And our conduct should be one that is compatible with Gods Word. Consistent with what the Bible teaches and in accordance with Gods will with our lives.
Such that whether anyone, be it Paul, or some instructor, or some supervisor, or even Christ Himself, should come or not come to be with us, we will be in compliance with that which is expected of us. We are being held responsible and accountable for our thoughts, decisions and actions. Though God is not here with us face to face, He does record our every thought and act even from heaven. In due time each of our records will be opened up in front of us for our evaluation, and our eternal rewards which have been reserved for us, will either be presented to us or not, or in some portion.
Paul reminds us that we are not to be contentious with one another. There is no competition between believers with respect to our eternal life, nor should there be even in this world. We should think with one spirit, with one mind, and that is the mind of Christ, not the mind of this world.
Believers who ignore the Bible and their study, are misguided and become competitive in the things of this world, but this world and its contents mean nothing. This world and its details will all disappear. None of it gores with us when we die. Yet at our death, our life does not cease into oblivion, but we enter into a new state, our eternal state. And that is a state which will go on forever. So we need to prepare ourselves for that longer lasting state and not this short term life here in the flesh as Paul describes this life.
To prepare ourselves in selfishness for this life only would be the quintessence of errors in judgment, since there is no one who does not understand that we all die sooner or later. Therefore the question is what then after our physical death? The answer is in the Bible of course. We have been appointed to believe in Christ, to live in eternity with God, and while we are here in this life, to study Gods Word and grow up in our spiritual life.
Why? Because this is the only source of information and resource that will give us the true meaning of life. The only source that gives us a frame of reference with respect to our orientation to life, to God, to things of the physical and spiritual realms. We learn to relax in our lives and not try to get ahead at the expense of harming others. We can advance in anything we do, when we advance in our spiritual lives and allow God to bless and promote us. He is capable of things which we can't even imagine.
We cease to be alarmed about the problems of this world, because in God there is our faith, our trust, our security, our fortress of protection against all things. God provides us with solutions to all things great or small.
We have not only been granted the opportunity to believe in Christ and therefore receive the gift of salvation and beyond that to have the opportunity to grow up spiritually, but we have another gift presented to us. That second gift is to suffer with Christ as well, while we are in this world. Now you say, 'Suffering is a blessing?'. And that is exactly what you experience everyday while you advance in your spiritual life. Sometimes it is so subtle that you do not realize it. Other times it is very noticeable in your life. But this is the proving ground for your advancement in your spiritual life. The circumstances in your life, your thoughts, other people, the various systems that exist in this world, and the various disasters that can occur all contribute to your testing environment. Through these mechanisms you have the opportunity to apply Bible doctrine to your life. To fail the test and do it over again until you get it right, or to pass a test and move forward in your spiritual life. God will continue to bombard you in many ways such that you will not relax and stray from your Bible study, and so that you will keep advancing. No army in history ever won a battle by retreating or standing still. Only the army that advances constantly will be the victor. God provides you with the logistics and resources to continue your advance throughout your life. From the confines of prison Paul advanced Bible doctrine for us all. The world could not stop Paul or Gods plan for him. Likewise for you. God has a plan for each one of us, and when we remain in fellowship, when we continue to study our Bible each and everyday, when we apply what we learn to our daily lives, then we are winning victory after victory. And no one in this world will probably ever know of your victories, but all of heaven knows and celebrates each one. The world has its heroes who have come and gone, but in heaven each believer who advances to maturity is the real hero of history and you will go on forever with the decorations of the hero. Decorations given directly to you from Jesus Christ.
