You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 24:1
1 And [kai] Jesus [Iesous] went out [exerchomai] , and departed [poreuomai] from [apo] the temple [hieron] : and [kai] his [autos] disciples [mathetes] came [proserchomai] to him for to shew [epideiknumi] him [autos] the buildings [oikodome] of the temple [hieron] . KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 24:1
1 And Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. NAS
Jesus has just told off the highest Jewish powers in the land, and now His discourse has ended from within the Temple walls. He leaves and heads for the high ridge to the East of Jerusalem called the Mount of Olives, and will continue His discourse which is called the Olivet discourse, where the subject will change from salvation and warning, to one of His return and the establishment of His Kingdom. But the disciples have certain things in mind when this Kingdom is to be established.
They are aware that there will be a period of tribulation immediately preceding the coming of the Messiah, Zech 14. They just misunderstand that it is not at their present time and it is not the present Roman rule which is going to be that tribulational period.
What the disciples and all of Israel were aware of was Isa. 9, Isa. 11, Jere. 23, Jere. 30, and Dan. 2, which foretold to the coming of a kingdom and one that would see their enemies vanquished and God rule established forever.
Isa. 9:6-7, '6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.' NAS
Isa 11:1-2, '1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.' NAS
From Jeremiah: 'Behold, the days are coming,' declares the Lord, 'when I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, 'The Lord our righteousness,' .... Jere. 23:5-6, 30:9-10. They longed for the day when the spoil taken from them would be divided among them, Zech. 14:1, when 'living waters would flow out of Jerusalem' Zech. 14:8, and 'there would be no more curse, for Jerusalem would dwell in security,' Zech. 14:11. They rejoiced that 'the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people ..., but it will itself endure forever,' Dan. 2:44
But now Jesus is going to throw them a curve. Something they did not expect.
They are leaving the Temple, and knowing what they thought they knew. Hearing what they thought they had just heard, they all turn and point to the Temple if as though to say, 'Here is the Temple. Your Temple. This is your (Jesus') office and we are ready to move in whenever you give the word.'
They looked at the temple which was not built by God, but by man. They looked at a temple made of wood and stone. And they drew the wrong conclusion, simply because they were used to its existence and they expected the Messiah to just come in and to take over. The Cross was going to be a total shock as we will see in the next few chapters.
But for now there will be two chapters of prophecy for the Age of Israel. The Church Age is excluded. It still remains a secret. But the Age of Israel has seven years of history remaining, as per Daniel's seventy weeks prophecy. This is only the sixty ninth week into that prophecy. It will be interrupted, and the Church Age will be inserted into history wherein a Royal Family will be built up, and once completed (the Rapture), then the Age of Israel will resume and finish out its remaining seven years (the real Tribulation).
The disciples are very proud by now. They just know that something very important in history is on the horizon, and they expect that they will be in the middle of it all. You can probably just imagine the excited anticipation and enthusiasm bubbling out of their ears. But in just a few hours, they will wake up in the Garden, when Jesus is arrested, and they will vanish into the night. Their emotional high in the clouds will take a nose dive right into the ground.
But that is still a few lessons away (quite a few).
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
