Matt. 23:37-39
37 'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. 38 'Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! 39 'For I say to you, from now on you shall not see Me until you say, ' Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!' NAS
From the time of Abraham, when he crossed over the river and went to the promised land, his crossing over gave him the name, Hebrew. Up and until the very day Jesus made these remarks, Jesus as God has wanted to gather all of His chosen people together like a momma hen gathers her chicks to protect and to raise them up as they should be raised - in security and in prosperity.
But the chicks rejected the momma hen. They strayed away from the chicken coop and went their own way out into the world. Needless to say, we studied briefly their history of suffering and humiliation, in yesterdays lesson.
The chicks, the genetic descendants of Abraham, will refuse to acknowledge Jesus Christ until the Tribulation. It is then and only then that the world and they (the Jews), will turn to Christ and acknowledge Him as Lord, and then they will see the coming of Christ, in all His glory, His second coming at the end of the Tribulation.
What people do, to remain defiant in their lives! The Jewish peoples have had their turmoil throughout history. And they have still survived history, but not due to their own efforts, but through the grace of God.
Many other peoples have been degenerate in history and they have vanished from history. They did not have Gods promise of preservation. God promised the Jews that they would survive history and would be delivered by God in the end times. Satan knew this, and Satan has tried his best to destroy them all. Satan has failed and will never succeed. But despite their stubborn streak which has lasted them throughout history, the Jewish peoples are still here.
God reserved their (the Jewish peoples) blessing and punishment for Himself. There is also a curse on anyone who tries to take their punishment into their own hands - the anti-Semitic warning. No one is to mess with them lest they receive the wrath of God. Since the Jews have always wandered away from God, His plan, His promise, and His only designated Son as their Messiah, then they have brought trouble onto themselves over and over again in history. They will remain stubborn until the last days of the Tribulation as is stated here in these last few verses. Then and only then, after their most terrible suffering yet to come (past history is nothing when compared to the suffering and atrocities they will face in the Tribulation), then they will finally turn to Christ.
We can learn from this lesson in history. First there have been many races of peoples in history who have gone negative toward God and have vanished from history. Second history is balanced on attitude toward Christ. We have a lot of cultures in the world at present, but there are really only two classes of people which are relevant in history - those who believe in Christ, and those who do not. All of history for nations and individuals tilts in the direction of our collective attitude toward Christ and Bible doctrine.
Remain stubborn in your attitude toward God and your personal history will fade as it has with many peoples in the past whom you and I have never even heard of. They are gone, vanished into nothingness and insignificance, nothing more than filler for history. Not a good legacy for anyone who has lived in this world. Do you wish your life to be useless and a worthless waste of time?
Despite all of history which is readily available to us all, and of which we have just touched on lightly in the last couple of days, there are many who will ignore its lesson with regard to their personal life.
People continue to make up their own wishful rules. People will selectively pick and choose what principles of doctrine they will and will not abide by. They do not learn. They continue thinking that all of this does not apply to them personally, but to others. Don't you fall victim to this type of thinking.
Also, God so desperately wants to bring all his chosen people unto Himself. There are two parallel concepts here. There are the genetic descendants of Abraham and there are the spiritual descendants of Abraham's pattern of faith. We all, who have believed in Christ, belong to the latter group. But there remains Jewish descendants by blood, from Abraham, and it is to these to whom that long awaited promise of gathering together applies. Actually the gathering together applies to both categories, but here in view is the eventual and final repentance of those who have descended by physical birth from Abraham. Unlike so many other races which have come and gone from history, the Jewish peoples have remained. Were it not for Gods promise to them through Abraham, they would have long ago disappeared from history.
The Jewish peoples give us an example, from history, of just what stubborn defiance toward God and His Word gets them - misery, frustration, trouble to no end. So we too can learn and make our individual lives better by getting with a good and genuine Bible study program, or we can individually follow in their historical path to our own individual oblivion. The choice as always, remains with each one of us.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
