Matthew 22:43-45
Lesson # Matt. 22:43-45
Study Material - Matt. 22:43-45
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 22:43-45
43 He saith [lego] unto them [autos] , How [pos] then [oun] doth David [Dabid] in [en] spirit [pneuma] call [kaleo] him [autos] Lord [kurios] , saying [lego] ,

45 If [ei] David [Dabid] then [oun] call [kaleo] him [autos] Lord [kurios] , how [pos] is he [esti] his [autos] son [huios] ? KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 22:43-45
43 He said to them, 'Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying, 44 'The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at My right hand, Until I put Thine enemies beneath Thy feet''? 45 'If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?' NAS
Quoting Psa. 110, Jesus reaches back to the Psalm that all recognize as that from David. With the same scriptures that are committed to memory by the Pharisees, Jesus brings their attention to all three members of the Godhead - My Lord (Father) ... To my Lord (Son) ... In the Spirit (Holy Spirit).
Further the reference to the Spirit eliminates David's referencing his own human spirit. The Lord is going to sit, an actual (not a representative action) positioning of the Lord. Since God cannot sit, then God must become something other than God in order to be able to sit, and that something is human form. God becomes man.
Jesus used the most revered form of Gods name, 'Kurios' in the Greek and 'Adonai' in the Hebrew from the Psalms.
So it is. David speaks from the power of the Spirit. By the way that is where you reside when you are in fellowship. In the Spirit. When we sin we are under the control of our sin nature. When we confess our sins, then God places us into fellowship and there our soul is under the control of the Holy Spirit.
When you are saved you receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Actually you receive the indwelling of all three members of the Trinity, but the Spirit is in view here. Being indwelled does not mean under His control. That depends on your volition and compliance with Gods command to be filled with the spirit (fellowship).
There are religions that take this a step too far and try to make this an emotional event - what with seizures and emotional highs and such, but that is all Hollywood phony stuff meant for the naive. Remember that the spiritual life is not of this realm. Mans emotions, mans senses, mans feelings and the like are not a part of the spiritual life. So holy-rollers good-bye.
David spoke from the Spirit, 2 Sam. 23:1+. In the Old Testament times, indwelling of the Spirit was not available. People who were saved then, were saved just as you and I are saved. One of the big differences between the Age of Israel and our Church Age, is that in our Age we do receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is automatic and immediate when you first believe in Christ. It is also permanent. You do not have to do anything to earn it nor can you deserve it. Nor is it an emotional event. It is a part of the long list of blessings that we receive when we believe in Christ. See the Blessings List on the Index page of the web site.
The power of the Spirit comes to us or is removed from us with our fellowship swings. In fellowship we are under the power of the Spirit. Out of fellowship we are under the power of our sin nature. David had that same situation. When he confessed his sins, he would be under the power of the Holy Spirit, and likewise when he sinned he would lose it. In the Old Testament there was one other concept called indument. By that the Holy Spirit would come upon a person with power. The person was not indwelled, but was endued with power and in this a person would receive extraordinary powers, that he would otherwise not have. Samson is the best example of this concept as he had great physical power when the Spirit was with him. This power concept was not for everyone and was limited to a very few people.
Now, in the Spirit, David said these things. Why would Jesus state this? Because these men, the Pharisees were well acquainted with the sacrifices, specifically with the confessional sacrifices. We have studied these in Leviticus already. They knew the concept of fellowship and that if David was in fellowship, then what he said was truth, and not of sin of any kind.
Second, My Lord is 'Adonai' referring to God, and Adonai is repeated here twice. God was speaking to God. Therefore the two parties were equal with each other. God is equal to God. But too we know that the Savior is going to be the son of David. The savior will be of the seed of the woman, and obviously a descendent of David, so the savior must be a man. That is well documented. The Pharisees recognized the humanity of the 'Messiah.'
Further Rev. 22:16 gives us yet one more reference to Jesus identity, where Jesus is said to be the root as well as the offspring of David. He is the source of David - Jesus Christ created all life. Jesus Christ has existed forever. And He is the descendant of David, the unique person of the universe - both God and man in the same person of Jesus Christ.
God the Father said to God the Son, 'Sit at my right hand.' The right hand of God is the place of ultimate power and of course of equality with God. A man only can sit. God is omnipresent and cannot sit in one place. This command was never made to the angels. Only to man.
God the Father is the author of the divine plan and as such within the context of that plan, all of Gods enemies will be made footstools upon their defeat. The feet of Christ will rest upon their necks as He then removes their evil heads from their bodies. A very well known system of judgment given to defeated enemies. They were executed. Though Jesus Christ executes all divine action of human history it is from the plan of the Father that these actions come. Christ does everything not of His own volition but He does everything in accordance with the Fathers plan.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
