Matthew 22:39-40
Lesson # Matt. 22:39-40
Study Material - Matt. 22:39-40
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 22:39-40
39 And [de] the second [deuteros] is like [homoios] unto it [autos] [houtos] , Thou shalt love [agapao] thy [sou] neighbour [plesion] as [hos] thyself [seautou] .
40 On [en] these [tautais] two [duo] commandments [entole] hang [kremannumi] all [holos] the law [nomos] and [kai] the prophets [prophetes] . KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 22:39-40
39 'The second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 'On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.' NAS
Jesus didn't stop there however. He went on to wrap up the complete package of ones attitude and reformation or transformation of ones mind. Not only is a personal love for God of the utmost importance in ones life, and that includes learning His truth, but every person is required to put it into practice. That means having a tolerant and concerned attitude toward others.
The normal person will take care of themselves to the best of their ability. No one will intentionally harm themselves or place themselves in harms way, or put themselves at risk intentionally. Thus this is the attitude that you are to have for others.
You should care for yourself. You should look out for your own best interest and this attitude should apply to others. Thus you never take advantage of others.
In contrast, the Pharisees hung heavy regulatory burdens on others, but they did not apply them to themselves, Matt.. 23:4. They did not even lift a finger when they violated the same regulations, yet they would drop the heavy hammer of law on the common person. They had double standards. They outwardly wished to be noticed by the masses, but inwardly they had only contempt for everyone. They felt themselves above others and others beneath them.
By not knowing love, one cannot know God, 1 Jn. 4:7-8. Love is an application of Bible doctrine in the soul. It is not an emotion. Emotion is not love. Again the word used here is 'agapao,' which is a mental commitment, not an emotional response or reaction.
Love is said to be the fulfillment of the law, Rom. 13:8-10. If you have love ('agapao'), then you have first learned Bible doctrine, you have second, retained it through the filling of the spirit (fellowship) and you have third, applied it to your life, both to self and to others. Being a nice person is not equivalent to 'love' which is defined here in the scriptures. Love is an application of Bible doctrine in the soul.
On these two principles are all of the scriptures based. The law of Moses, the fundamental basics of doctrine, the principles of worship, and the prophets, the application of same.
'Hear, O Israel!' A quote recited by the Israelites twice a day, everyday. But it is also followed by the principle and then the command of love. The principle? 'The Lord is God. The Lord is one (unique)'.
Next Jesus is going to ask what these Pharisees think of the Christ, who is the Lord (on which they agree), and who is the son of David (on which they agree also), but at the same time He is the Lord of David. How can that be?
But I think we will go to Deuteronomy (a book of review), for the next few lessons in order to tie these two principles together. Genesis is a book of beginnings. Exodus is the book of delivery. Leviticus is the book of approach (to God). Numbers is the book of wandering. And Deuteronomy is the book of review. Hummm! Does there seem to be a pattern here?
