Matthew 22:31-33
Lesson # Matt. 22:31-33
Study Material - Matt. 22:31-33
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 22:31-33
31 But [de] as touching [peri] the resurrection [anastasis] of the dead [nekros] , have ye [anaginosko] not [ou] read [anaginosko] that which [ho] was spoken [rheo] unto you [humin] by [hupo] God [theos] , saying [lego] ,
32 I [ego] am [eimi] the God [theos] of Abraham [Abraam] , and [kai] the God [theos] of Isaac [Isaak] , and [kai] the God [theos] of Jacob [Iakob] ? God [theos] is [esti] not [ou] the God [theos] of the dead [nekros] , but [alla] of the living [zao] .

Matt. 22:31-33
31 'But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, 32'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living. ' 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. NAS
Regardless of the questions asked, and the answers returned, the Sadducees did not have a change of heart. The negative person seeks to deceive others throughout his life, and only ends up deceiving himself.
Jesus asks again, 'have you not read?' He knows full well that these men read the scriptures religiously (if you'll permit me to use that term). They were dedicated to their philosophy of self interest. They sought to deceive others, using the scriptures as their front for their luxurious and chosen life style. But as time went on, they came to the point of believing their own lie. And so, they fell into their own self made trap. Such is the case for everyone who compromises their spiritual life for something less, or for something more convenient in their life.
We are all guilty of wanting that which we have become accustomed. We all have a subtle security weakness in our life. But these Sadducees' entire career was a lie into which they had fallen head over heel.
They did not even believe in the very basic doctrines of the scriptures. The scriptures they presumed to know so well, and with authority. 'Have you not read?' They read, but they rejected what the scriptures said.
Jesus uses the present tense 'I Am.' in this reply. God is the awesome 'I Am,' which we have studied in several of our Bible lessons. 'I Am that I Am. I Am has sent you.' Is what He (Jesus Christ) told Moses, from the burning bush. God is the present God of those who are presently living. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died physically, but they did not cease from existence. They merely went to another venue, Paradise, which is one of the four compartments deep inside the earth in that under world referred to as Sheol, or Hades.
Sometimes those terms refer to Hell or Torments (another of the four compartments), or to the lake of Fire, but often they refer to the entirety of the vast under world.
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob went to Paradise (along with all other believers during the Old Testament times), and there awaited the victory of Christ on the Cross. Once that victory was achieved, then Jesus Christ, led a great procession, a victory parade, made up of all believers that were residing in the underworld Paradise, and they all transferred to the new Paradise, in Heaven. The old paradise in the underworld is now empty.
The Old Testament unbelievers who could view that Paradise and its occupants, from a across a great gulf deep, were extremely miserable while being able to see believers in Paradise, but when the believers vacated that venue and left for heaven, you can imagine the utter heartache of those unbelievers felt, seeing them go and now knowing that their doom was even more certain. You may wish to review the story of Lazarus an the rich prince, Lk. 16:20+.
Though not here with us, everyone who has lived and since died in previous generations, since the time of Adam, are still alive somewhere. Believers are in heaven, and unbelievers reside in Torments and will remain there until the last and final judgment, the Great White Throne.
God is the God of the living. Life does not merely exist for the moment and then is gone. We live on and on forever in some form. Better to live in heaven in resurrection bodies, than in that other bad place. The reality of this fact and truth has to somehow sink in, to ones brain cells. We all live our lives from day to day, and generally get caught up in our daily rituals of repetition. Not seeing instant results in the spiritual life can be disheartening, if ones faith is weak. But then that is where a daily Bible study comes into play.
God teaches us. He opens our eyes to see the truth. Sure I type these words and you read them, but it is God the Holy Spirit who makes the spiritual information real to us. From there we can grow up spiritually, and our faith on which we solely rely, will be strengthened.
The crowd was astonished, but not astonished enough. They did not want to change their old habits or beliefs. They were not convinced that their way of life was worse than that which God offers. Some people just live in a fog and just do not get it. Actually they just don't want to get it. Don't you be numbered in that foggy group. Be tough, be persistent, and persevere in doctrine, Isa. 41:10.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
