Wedding Feast Matt. 22:9-10 9 Go ye [poreuomai] therefore [oun] into [epi] the highways [diexodos] [hodos] , and [kai] as many as [hosos] [an] ye shall find [heurisko] , bid [kaleo] to [eis] the marriage [gamos] . 10 So [kai] those [ekeinos] servants [doulos] went out [exerchomai] into [eis] the highways [hodos] , and gathered together [sunago] all [pas] as many as [hosos] they found [heurisko] , both [te] bad [poneros] and [kai] good [agathos] : and [kai] the wedding [gamos] was furnished [pletho] with guests [anakeimai] . KJV-Interlinear 9 'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.' 10 'And those slaves went out into the streets, and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests. NASB
Now that the cities have been destroyed, there are no longer any locals to invite to the wedding feast. So now the messengers have to take to the highways traveling away from the cities in the local area, and into the far reaches of the kingdom.
In 70 A.D., Judea was pretty well hammered by the Roman army. Over a million Jews died in the siege and ensuing breach of the various cities of Judea. Hundreds of cities were destroyed. Even during the siege in the many months prior to the fall of Jerusalem, there were competing Jewish factions within the city that fought each other and of which who caused nearly as many casualties amongst themselves, as these factions fought over the limited resources and over control of that dying city. This is little known in history, but it gives us a pretty good illustration of just how unbelievers and negative believers, will fight to the end over something that is obviously a loosing situation. With the Roman army bearing down on the region and with it surrounding the city, one would have thought that getting out of there would be of primary concern. Indeed many did leave - the smart ones. But those who had closed souls, remained and consequently died a horrible death or were enslaved.
Now back to our parable. The bride is not identified. The feast has not yet occurred, so the new invitations to guests will apply to those living in the Age of Israel, or the Tribulation as that is the only remaining portion of the dispensation of the Age of Israel.
Verse ten indicates that there will be many, and this means an extremely large number. Many will attend the feast, and many will attempt to crash the party, based on their own rewritten invite - 'both evil and good.' The numbers are large, and since the Tribulation has not yet occurred in history, then that seems to imply that the timing for the Tribulation will occur during a time when the world population is extremely large. Remember that all dispensational references refer to the Age of Israel. The Church Age (our dispensation) was not revealed nor did it begin until after the Cross. Actually it began with the first Feast of Pentecost which occurred 50 days after Passover (the Cross).
Back in the time of Christ the population of the world was estimated at 300 million people. Now, in our current year of 2004, our population is over 6.3 billion, and growing at a rate worldwide which would cause the population to double about every 33 years or so. If so, then our population in the 2030's will be at 12 billion, in the 2060's it will be at 24 billion, and at the end of this century it will be flirting with 50 billion people plus. Crowwwwwwded! One can only imagine the problems that will exist then.
We know that Satan (in the book of Job) always tests God and complains that this or that has not yet been tried. Thus the test with Job. Well, overpopulation in the world has never existed, so I personally believe that this will be a circumstance with which mankind will be tested. Nothing to prove it of course, but it just seems logical. The rapture could occur at anytime, but we have come nearly 2000 years since the Cross, and we have seen a lot of history what with mans movement around the world and the establishment of the four dominant powers in the world (north - Russia, south - the Arab states, east - China, and west - we here in the USA and/or Europe). These four representing the four regions of power in the world, not just these four countries. Anyway, God does not follow a haphazard plan. And the logic just seems to fit. That is, the logic of an overpopulated world to demonstrate mankind's total inability to solve mans problems.
Furthermore, mankind has believers in this world through which God gives the world blessing and support, so yet another test will come when the Rapture occurs. Mans inability to function when Gods objects of support (believers) are withdrawn (the Rapture) from the world.
The Tribulation will see a very rapid deterioration in the world. In fact within seven years human history would have ceased were it not for people who will believe in Christ during those seven years, and second, were it not for Christ's return (Second Advent) to save them. In the mean time, during the Tribulation there will be millions upon millions of martyred Christians as well as millions upon millions of unbelievers who will die from the vast number of atrocities and disasters that will occur during that period. The next increment of our study in Revelation which is coming up.
Back to our parable. The messengers will go out, to the four corners of the world, to deliver feast invitations (the gospel of salvation) to any and all. Many will come properly dressed and many will come on their own terms. But that is getting ahead to tomorrow's lesson. Note that the 'many' are assembled outside in the 'hall' and not in the banquet room. Before anyone is admitted into the feast, they are checked out for their proper credentials. Here the proper admission slip is the dress code (salvation), but again we'll save that for tomorrow. Also, as we have noted in our previous studies in Revelation, there will be worldwide evangelism and a large number of positive people responding to the gospel even during the terrible times that will occur in the Tribulation. This parable reinforces that truth.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
