Lesson # Matt. 21:8-9
Study Material - Matt. 21:8-9
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 21:8-9
8 And [de] a very great [pleistos] multitude [ochlos] spread [stronnumi] their [heautou] garments [himation] in [en] the way [hodos] ; others [de] [allos] cut down [kopto] branches [klados] from [apo] the trees [dendron] , and [kai] strawed [stronnumi] them in [en] the way [hodos] .
9 And [de] the multitudes [ochlos] that went before [proago] , and [kai] that followed [akoloutheo] , cried [krazo] , saying [lego] , Hosanna [hosanna] to the Son [huios] of David [Dabid] : Blessed [eulogeo] is he that cometh [erchomai] in [en] the name [onoma] of the Lord [kurios] ; Hosanna [hosanna] in [en] the highest [hupsistos] . KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 21:8-9
8 And most of the multitude spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees, and spreading them in the road. 9 And the multitudes going before Him, and those who followed after were crying out, saying, 'Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!' NAS
The crowd spreads their coats and palm branches before Jesus as He rides into the city. The crowd is huge, not because of His presence, but because of the traditional annual Passover Feast celebration which is about to get underway. The people are before Him, beside Him, and behind Him. People are shouting all the right words of praise from Psalm 113-118. Their attention is fixed on Him, but their minds are fixed on their own motives.
'Hosanna! Hosanna!' Is repeated over and over. 'Save now! Save now!' Is its meaning.
Have you ever been to a sporting event, a tournament where the winner qualifies for yet another final event? The crowd shouts, 'We're number one.' They shout it over and over in the heat of the moment. They, the crowd, did not win the game, the team did, but the crowd identifies with the team in their ecstasy and claim the privilege of being 'number one.' They still have yet more games to win, and perhaps the opponents have not yet been determined, but there is a lot of emotion, and the future is certain no matter who the opponent might be. Most probably many in the crowd do not even know the names of the players on their team. They don't care - 'We're number one.'
And here we find the same fickle fans. 'Save now,' 'hosanna' is not a reference to the Cross and salvation of mankind. The crowd haven't a clue as to the purpose of this visit. They wouldn't even consider that an execution was in the works. Yet they have heard, through the grape vine, that Pharisees have issued orders for anyone who knows the whereabouts of Jesus, was to turn Him in, so that they could 'seize' Him, Jn 11:57.
The crowd was all wrapped up in their selfish desires. Here is a man who could fulfill all their selfish desires. He could feed them all. He could make them all well. He could heal all their aches and pains. He could even raise them up after they died. Hey, they can live forever! 'We're number one! Look out Rome!'
But what is driving them? Emotions. They are fair weather supporters. Not even fair weather believers, for many are unbelievers. They are driven based on gossip rather than Bible doctrine. They are driven based on common talk, exaggerated talk, rather on Bible doctrine. They have no depth of soul, because they have no Bible doctrine in their souls. There is no foundation, therefore no basis for stability or understanding of life. A shallow soul is a fickle soul.
People who lack Bible doctrine (serious Bile doctrine) in their soul, either because they are 'fair weather' believers (those who allow carnal compromises into their spiritual life), or because they are indifferent to doctrine, or because they are outright in opposition to Bible doctrine, are all shallow in their spiritual life. They will allow their emotions to drive many of their decisions in life, and to that end they are fickle.
When things are going in the manner in which they want things to go, then God is Ok. But, when truth crosses their preferences, when truth challenges their attitude, when truth condemns their irresponsibility's in life, then their compromised standards, their excuses for not doing something that God expects, all rise up and become more real to them than truth. God is second guessed and is forced to a back seat in their minds.
'Save us. Save us. Son of David. Who comes in the name of the Lord.' They have the words right, but they do not know of whom they speak. Jesus Christ is the Lord, the Son of God.
Every week, these people recite Deu. 6:4, 'Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.'
This means that the Son of God, is God. The Son of God is unique. There is none other like Him. He is the one and only. There are no other substitutes. Jesus Christ has come in the Name of the Father and in His own name. The people speak of Him as just another prophet in the long history of the prophets of Israel. And they look to Him as coming now to throw off the yoke of Rome, and a lot of burdensome Pharisee regulations.
Fickle people have no depth of soul. They have no courage. They cheer Him on, but will stand back and 'watch' Jesus do the fighting. Don't see anyone taking up arms now do we? After all. He can do what 'we' want and without 'our' help! After all. If something went wrong, then the people would get into trouble. Best avoid that. 'We're number one! We're number one!'
In just three more days, they will shout for the release of Barabbas. Look into your own mirror. What is your spiritual status?
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
