Study Material - Matt. 19:16
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 19:16
16 And [kai] , behold [idou] , one [heis] came [proserchomai] and said [epo] unto him [autos] , Good [agathos] Master [didaskalos] , what [tis] good thing [agathos] shall I do [poieo] , that [hina] I may have [echo] eternal [aionios] life [zoe] ? KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 19:16
16 And behold, one came to Him and said, 'Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?' NAS
What is eternal life? What does it mean to each one of us? How do we obtain it? Do we have to 'do' something in order to obtain it? These are the typical questions of those who lack Bible doctrine in their soul. They lack Bible doctrine either because they have not taken the time to learn, or they have taken the time, but just do not understand it because the understanding of Gods Word first requires a mechanism for understanding before one can learn and therefore understand.
That mechanism is the human spirit of course. A person (unbeliever) or one who has not believed in Christ, lacks a human spirit. They have been born body and soul, but are not complete in the human make-up in that they lack the human spirit. The human spirit is the mechanism or conduit through which all spiritual knowledge flows into the human soul. This spiritual knowledge refers to spiritual growth.
Before an unbeliever can be saved, he must hear the gospel, and in this, the Holy Spirit makes the truth of the gospel real to the unbeliever, and therefore the unbeliever has an opportunity to either believe in Christ or not. If the person believes, then the human spirit at that moment in time is instantly created, and into it is imputed eternal life. If the person rejects Christ, then they are stuck with the forever life of their soul. And that is not good.
Quality is the issue rather than quantity when considering eternity. Every person who is born has a soul that will live forever. Believers will live in heaven - a better quality of life. Unbelievers will live in the lake of fire forever - a quantity of years which is not desirable.
'In Greek mythology, Aurora, goddess of the dawn, fell in love with a young mortal named Tithonus. When Zeus offered to provide anything she wished for her human lover, she asked that he might never die. The wish was granted, but because she had not asked that Tithonus remain forever young, he continued to grow older and more decrepit. Instead of being blessed, he was cursed to perpetual degeneration.'
So it is with human beings. We will all live forever in one form or another. It is far better to live in heaven with eternal youth, then in the Lake of Fire with eternal condemnation.
The young man is quite wealthy, but in spite of his wealth, he is concerned with the afterlife. What comes after this life, and how does one insure that the best choice is made in order to obtain that better afterlife?
In other passages the Bible explains in more detail:
1 John 5:11-13, '11 And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.
John 6:28-29, '28 They said therefore to Him, 'What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?' 29 Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.'
In short, God possesses eternal life in its best quality form. He distributes that 'life' to any and all who have believed in Christ - period. There is no work involved, no effort made, nothing that man can do in order to earn eternal life. All people have 'forever' life, but only those who have believed in Christ receive the better quality form of that forever life, namely eternal life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
