Matthew 18:10a

Lesson # Matt. 18:10a
Study Material - Matt. 18:10a

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 18:10a

10 Take heed [horao] that ye despise [kataphroneo] not [me] one [heis] of these [touton] little ones [mikros] ; for [gar] I say [lego] unto you [humin] , That [hoti] in [en] heaven [ouranos] their [autos] angels [aggelos] do always [dia] [pas] behold [blepo] the face [prosopon] of my [mou] Father [pater] which [ho] is in [en] heaven [ouranos] . KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 18:10a

10 'See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you, that their angels in heaven continually behold the face of My Father who is in heaven. NAS

'Do not despise.' This covers a huge territory from any aggressive activity toward Christians, to indifferent attitudes. To include but not limited to: looking down on others in arrogance, flaunting ones 'better' status in life over that of others, judging others in self righteousness, or gossip of any type against others (gossip is one of the seven worst possible sins).

Showing partiality or personal favoritism toward some over others is a means of despising those who are ignored or disfavored. To show indifference, to withhold help, aid, charity, withholding Bible teaching from those who are in need, when one has the opportunity and the means to help. We saw in our previous study the mandatory poll tax Jesus paid to the Temple (an amount equivalent to two days pay - two drachma), and though we do not have such a tax today, it is in part, representative of that which God demands us to pay as part of our expected responsibility toward perpetuating the teaching of the Word of God. Refusing to do so is in effect a despising of others.

To ridicule others because of their IQ, because of their demeanor, because of the way they dress, because of their personal appearance, because of their race, culture, color, beliefs, to ridicule anyone for any reason is not only a despising of them, but a demonstration of ones stupidity and extreme arrogance. None of us were appointed 'better' than others.

To be insensitive toward others is a despising of others. Remember that all who lack Bible doctrine in the soul are in effect spiritual babies. Babies or young believers (spiritually not physically) have difficulties. They lack wisdom and discernment. They will have problems in life for which there will be no solutions obvious to them. Often their problems are due to their own foolish life style, but as goes babe's emotions so also goes our sensitivity toward their needs. We do not laud over them with goo which could be seen as looking down on them with indignant attitudes, but rather we ignore their flaws and point to a better life style through Bible study. Ours is not to judge and point out their sins or their flaws, but to point instead to Bible doctrine and the better life it offers through spiritual growth.

We should not be heartlessly critical against others. We see this kind of attitude in social circles, in clubs, in office or employment environments, in politics. Criticizing others, especially when it is intended to promote ourselves, is disgustingly cheap and evil. Often times you will see inordinate ambitions manifested in business, in politics, in social circles, even in marriages as one party attempts to elevate themselves over another party through their heartless and relentless criticism.

Often in life in order to advance oneself you have to push down another. This type of advancement is self centered greed and out of line in the Word of God.

To confront others in public is out of line. To embarrass others in public is out of line. If an issue comes up then it should be brought before the offending party in private. If they listen then you have won a spiritual victory. If they reject you, then you withdraw. You have tried. It is in Gods hands now.

To take advantage of others for personal gain is out of line. To cheat, to lie, to commit fraud such that you gain at anothers expense is out of line and an arrogant despising of their intelligence and person.

What then?

We are to consider the situation of others from their point of view 'and' from what is right. We are to look out for the needs of others. Do we roll over and allow others to walk all over us? No. Children need to be taught. Often times children make mistakes and need to learn from their own mistakes. They need to become responsible. To ignore the corrections required is to 'not' help them. God allows us to learn Bible doctrine. God allows us to make mistakes and learn from them. We can do no less for others. To constantly bail people out does not help them, but we are not to withhold support just because others constantly make mistakes. We are not to withhold that which is within our power to do, just because others do not follow the same philosophy we follow.

We have a responsibility to others in life. We have a responsibility to self in our spiritual life. We have a responsibility to God, and that is the next lesson. Our angels (who are 'our' angels?) are in heaven in constant view of God. We'll resume there tomorrow.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
