Matt. 12:41-42
41 'The men of Nineveh shall stand up with this generation at the judgment, and shall condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 'The Queen of the South shall rise up with this generation at the judgment and shall condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
NAS
Two gentile peoples. The former being people of Nineveh who were brutal and sinful peoples, and the latter, the Queen of the Sabeans, or Queen of the South, both heard the message of God and repented at just the mere words spoken.
Jonah hated the Ninevites. He was ordered by God to go there and give them not the message of promise, but a message of warning and doom. They had but 40 days to change their minds and then destruction was going to rain down on them and none would escape.
The people of Sodom heard their warnings and they laughed or ignored the warnings. Destruction bombed them off of the face of the planet and the remaining parts of Sodom lie at the bottom of the Dead Sea.
The Ninevites not only heard the message of warning, but they repented in mass country wide. Jonah went there in protest to God. Jonah did not like the Ninevites because they were such a brutal people and that thoroughly disgusted Jonah. Why should he waste his time on these pagan scum. Jonah even went there, finally after a short scenic detour via a great whale, and gave his message. Then Jonah sat down and waited to see their destruction. Jonah hoped for it because he felt that they deserved no better. They repented, and Jonah pouted because he did not get to see their destruction. God taught Jonah a lesson regarding grace.
The Queen of Sheba was on the other end of the social spectrum. She was a nice and beautiful woman. The country of Sabea was a rich and extremely prosperous country, and she lived far, far away from Solomon. Yet she heard of his wisdom and of God, and she came to hear of God. She traveled a long way in a great caravan. She laid tremendous treasures at Solomon's feet and she, a Queen of a wealthy empire, also sat at Solomon's feet just to hear him speak.
Note, in both cases there were no miracles only words. No voices from heaven, only the voice of Jonah and Solomon. Both mere men. No privileged nations. No privileged peoples. Only the word of God. One in warning and one in promise.
Now we have here the Pharisees who lived in a nation with a long and privileged history. God had bestowed the scriptures on the Israelites. God came to earth through a lineage through this race. They had miracle after miracle, and great ones at that, throughout their history. No one else can claim anything as great as the parting of the sea, having the Ark of the Covenant, having and even recording the scriptures. Yet these Pharisees had strayed from the scriptures and had imposed their own interpretations and even enhanced the scriptures with their own additional regulations such that they had missed the entire point of Gods purpose.
And now they had the actual Son of God present and standing before them. One who was far, far greater than Jonah and Solomon. One who had performed miracle after miracle, and still they refused to see the truth. Their position in life, their attitudes towards themselves, their lusts and so forth, were far more important to them than God in the flesh. The most unique event in all of human history was rejected.
And there were peoples both better and worse then they who turned to God with far less appeal from God, than these Pharisees received from Christ in person.
So the lesson here is - arrogance is an extremely powerful sin. It deceives and traps in its deception. People will be more defiant in life when arrogant. They will hold on to things that are of no value. They will even place greater value on things of no importance (man made rules) than even the life or well being of a person (withholding aid or help or support because something else has been defined as being more important). Arrogance is subtle at first but then it takes hold and you are lost in its grasp before you know it.
Priorities are important in life but they must be the correct priorities. God and Bible study first, and all else second.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
