Matthew 12:38
Lesson # Matt. 12:38
Study Material - Matt. 12:38
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 12:38
38 Then [tote] certain [tis] of the scribes [grammateus] and [kai] of the Pharisees [Pharisaios] answered [apokrinomai] , saying [lego] , Master [didaskalos] , we would [thelo] see [eido] a sign [semeion] from [apo] thee [sou] . KJV-Interlinear
Matt. 12:38
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him, saying, 'Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.' NAS
The scribes and Pharisees thought greatly of themselves. No one could rise to the high ranks of the priesthood without a great deal of study and command of the scriptures, especially in the highly regarded regulations of the temple.
In their arrogance these men challenged Jesus with sarcastic and hypocritical requests and comments. So that all could see and hear their 'righteous' and 'objective' attempts to seek out the truth and to positively identify this 'Jesus' as either a fraud or the genuine article, then these 'great' men of the temple confronted Jesus with their ridiculous questions and tests.
To the discerning observer, their questions were obviously dumb ones. What have they been observing from Jesus for over a year now. Christ had been curing all kinds of disease. He probably cured many diseases for which mankind didn't even have a identifying word. He raised the dead. Who among the Pharisees could match this performance, let alone even have seen this miracle in their entire lives. Yet now there is this Jesus who was curing and raising right and left, with no observable formal education, with no tools or instruments of any kind, but with a mere thought, with a mere spoken word, with a mere touch, healings were accomplished for those who need help in His presence as well as those who were far away. Even proximity to Jesus was not relevant.
So these 'learned' men put forth a query which is not defined here, but in Matt. 16 we see some of the details of their request. There they asked for signs from heaven. We only assume that these requests for signs from heaven were for some type of spectacular events, perhaps even to the point of having God be so gracious as to drop down out of heaven and speak directly to them and thus certify Jesus.
This is of course not Gods intent, nor His plan. Any people who think that they can superimpose their own will on God, to tempt Him with some sort of test, just to gain some sort of proof, when many proofs have already been given, are a very arrogant people.
They play games with God. Their audience is the masses. They seek to gain popularity with people so as to gain the following of people. But who are people? Dust. Any person who seeks the attentions of people seeks the attentions of dust. Plain common dust, and nothing more. How many boast of that kind of following?
Any person who seeks the righteousness of mankind over that of God, are really seeking what Isaiah has described as filthy, grungy, reused over and over, disgusting menstrual rags. Ooops! Perhaps there are some in this study (new folks) who have not been through our study of Isaiah's 'rag' sermon. Oh well. Anyway, how many people would boast of that kind of following? And yet there are many who do. They just cannot see the truth of their desires, nor the true faces of their audience.
So these smart guys challenge Jesus for more and even grander proofs. They ask not for that which has been offered in prophecy (words they read every day and week in their synagogues), but they ask for things that God has not set out in His divine plan. God will not set aside His plan for the sake of a few arrogant and defiantly stubborn people.
God will not set aside His plan (which is perfect by the way) just to please yours or my demand for something more. God has already placed into motion all that is necessary to convince us, or to convict us, depending on our attitude toward Him.
It is on our shoulders to either get our act together and get with Gods program, or to remain defiant and try to impose our own ideas on history. We are to comply with His plan. God is not required to comply with our plan.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
