Matthew 6:22-24

Lesson # Matt. 6:22-24
Study Material - Matt. 6:22-24

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 6:22-24

22 'The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 'But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 'No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

The word for lamp is 'luchnos', light, illuminator, white. The word for eye is 'opthalmos', eye, clear, vision, to gaze with eyes wide open, to see clearly. And the word for single is 'haplous', to form a union, to properly fold together, to make single.

The eye is a lens, something through which perceptions are funneled into the soul. The eye is a vehicle of discernment. It picks and chooses that which it sees and decides what to accept and what to reject. Thus integrated with the mind, with ones previous knowledge base in the soul, a person can see life through the eyes and sort out things. Using ones moral standards, using ones desires for things, using ones motives, then the eye becomes the principle element for making decisions and for determining the path a person will take in life. Is this the actual eye, that little thing that is lodged up in your head? No. It is your modus operandi, or a representation of the way you function in life.

So there are two opinions in life. You must choose between one or the other, but not both. People often choose the way of the world. Some people choose the way of Gods word (that is the correct application of Gods word). Then there are those in the middle who try to live a little of both of the ways of life. They ride the fence and lean which ever way seems convenient for them at the moment.

If your means of reception is clear (if your eye is clear), if you have Bible doctrine in you and therefore have the information necessary to make proper and correct decisions in life, then your whole body will be full of light. That is, the application of what you know will be the correct application and your life will be full, and a light not only to yourself but to others as well.

If you allow the opinions of this world to enter into your decision making process, if you allow your sin nature to influence your decision making process, then your eye is said to be bad, defective, dirty, grimy, and therefore the views you make and the decisions you make will be flawed.

A flawed decision making process is the same as operating in darkness. When it is dark around you, then you cannot see everything, therefore you cannot make complete decisions in life based on inadequate information, or you tend to ignore the lack of correct information which you may see in the darkness and you make biased decisions based on your lusts, motives, prejudices, and so forth.

Just as there are varying degrees of darkness, sometimes with a little light, sometimes with more or less light depending on what you have learned Biblically throughout your life, then your decisions may have some semblance of truth in them. So you might not study your Bible each day, perhaps never, but you do follow the traffic laws when driving, so you do respect at least some form of authority (traffic laws) in life and in so doing you have a reasonably safe driving experience. Perhaps you are honest in your work, or have a pleasing personality with other people and are not an obnoxious person promoting discord with others, so you have some peace in your working environment. Even with ignoring doctrine there are circumstances that allow every living person to function in life. You can even have a reasonably comfortable marriage. Life is not restricted to believers in Christ only. But any life you choose which excludes Christ completely, is spent in the jungle and therefore exposed to the dark dangers that exist in the jungle.

Gods protections in the jungle are limited - volition, marriage, family, authority, nationalism, free enterprise, law and order. These are the common frameworks that help one to survive in the jungle. When they break down, then there is virtually nothing protecting a person in life. Attacks on these foundations come in many forms - slavery, homosexuality, divorce, crime, internationalism, socialism, tyranny, prejudices and so forth. These then destroy the frameworks that God has established in common grace for the protection of the human race.

But to each individual there is a clear choice in life. Either follow Gods opinion, or follow everything else which may include some portions of Gods opinion. The former is the best course in life, since it is pure light with no defects, not faults, no exposure to the dangers that lurk in the jungle. The latter is where the problems in life reside. Trouble may be sometimes protected by God, but often tines not. The world is filled with information which obviously includes Gods Word, Gods values, Gods guidance in life, along with all the other philosophies that exist. But your soul is controlled by only one ruler at any moment in time. There are two possible rulers - the sin nature or the Holy Spirit. Which will you serve? This is the determining factor as to whom your master will be.

A missionary from long ago once wrote that he explained this principle to a native chief. Inside you there are two dogs, one good dog and one bad dog. They are constantly at odds with each other. The chief asked which dog would win. And the missionary replied, 'The victory in your soul goes to the dog that you give the command - sic em.'

So your volition is the determining factor. You have a choice as to which master you will choose. You cannot have two masters. The spiritual life is a mutually exclusive life. It is not part worldly, part spiritual. It is not a balance between the lusts of ones desires and the will of God. It is not a convenient tool with which one can live a life of sin, or live on the loose side, then confess to God expecting to get away with ones infractions. There are always repercussions to ones decisions.

If you smoke, you risk cancer. If you confess, will God cancel the cancer? No. Smoking is not a sin and therefore does not come under the category of confession, but smoking is a rather dumb thing to do, kind of like jumping off a ten story building. On the one hand you get cancer, on the other hand you get broken bones or worse. Fool around sexually a lot and you may contract aids. Now fornication is a sin and God will forgive sin, but not the disease you contract. You'll have to live with it. Rob a bank and confess it and God will forgive the robbery, but you'll still have to do the time in prison if you are caught and convicted.

Confession is not a free ticket to do whatever you wish in life and expect to get away with it. Confession is a mechanism with which you may regain fellowship within your soul and reestablish that connection with God where Bible doctrine can move throughout your soul and spirit.

If you play games with God, you'll lose. Pick your master - Bible doctrine and be true to it throughout all your life. Do not ride the fence and try to reap the best that God has to offer as well as the world. This is a false and misleading concept. Every time you choose against God you are in effect an enemy of God, a cheater on God, an adulterer pursuing the world in lust.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
