Lesson # Matt. 5:21-22
Study Material - Matt. 5:21-22
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Matt. 5:21-22
21 'You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit murder' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' 22 'But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever shall say, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Here Jesus explains the sixth commandment, 'Thou shalt not murder'. Though a lot of translations use the word kill, there is a very big difference between murder and kill. Briefly, murder is the criminal act of taking ones own life or the life of another. Here a person does not have the right to take the life of another. There are situations when that right is granted, and that granting comes from God alone, not man granting to himself the right to execute another human being. There are two instances when killing another person is valid. The first is as a punishment for an extremely severe crime - murder. The second right granted by God for the taking of life is in times of war. Neither of these should be used frivolously and there is certainly a great deal of responsibility thrust upon those in power when it comes to the uses of these rights.
I know, there are many documented cases where convicted persons were later found to be innocent. No one knows how many innocent persons over the years have actually been executed, but nevertheless God has issued a command that any who murder (the criminal act) shall be punished by execution. Furthermore, if a nation rises up (criminally) against another nation then war is permitted for defense and or the punishment of the aggressive nation or nations. Were it not for these two deterrents mankind would be in a shambles.
But here we are introduced to an even deeper meaning of the sixth commandment. Your thoughts of hate and anger are equated to murder. In the spiritual life, you have a relationship with God because your thoughts are pure, so to speak. You have and should practice a regular habit of confession in order to do two things. One to comply with Gods command for confession, thus placing you back into fellowship, but the other thing you are doing in your life is training your thought process. You are self disciplining your life and your thought process, such that sin and the production of the sin nature will not gain control over your life, and consequently ruin you.
If there were no systems of checks in life, then sin would run rampant. Peoples would multiply in their numbers and rage would take over. Crime escalates, war increases. Chaos and tyranny would reign on the planet. Therefore the need for law and order, as well as punishment.
It is not enough to look to the law and say that it applies only to criminals and not to ones self. For the law is important for the preservation of life in the jungle. But in the spiritual life there is an even higher court in heaven where all facts are accumulated, evaluated, and punishments dished out as required.
No one gets away with anything. Yes there are government people who are corrupt. Yes there are judges who are corrupt. Yes there are prosecutors who are corrupt. These people sit in positions of power and prosecute many who deserve it, as well as many who do not. But that is part of the activities that take place in the jungle. Whether they are good or bad activities makes no difference. This is just the realities of the jungle.
There is a higher court. We studied it briefly in Daniel, where Nebuchadnezzar was evaluated and a decision was issued by the high court in heaven. Nebuchadnezzar was the king, yet no one gets away with anything. Whether people are in power or not makes no difference to God. We all have our responsibilities and God does not hold any prejudice against anyone. In that high court of heaven, only true justice is handed down, and it is permanent.
So if you have not killed someone, if you have not robbed a bank, if you have not done a lot of things that you read about in the papers, this does not exempt you from being held accountable in Gods high court. You are a human being, you do have a sin nature, and you do fail, and more often than you realize - probably several times each day. Just ignoring the confession command of God is an act of arrogance, ignoring Bible study is an act of arrogance. So you see, by not being obedient is an act of disobedience, therefore a sin, therefore you are out of fellowship and open to punishment.
The Christian life is a proprietary life. It is unique and exclusive. It belongs only to those who have believed in Christ. Unbelievers cannot enter into this club, unless they comply with its admission requirements - faith in Christ.
The spiritual life is a proprietary life. It belongs only to those who are in fellowship, only to those who advance through their Bible study, only to those who apply Gods standards to their daily lives. It does not belong to unbelievers. It does not belong to those believers who are negative.
The wealth and blessings and rewards of this exclusive club are tremendous, and they are handed out to those who are obedient to its rules. The rules begin with your thoughts, your attitude, your decisions. From there you either learn and comply or you don't.
Your actions are merely those which follow thought. Before you do something, you have already thought about it. Granted there are some people that seem to be incapable of thought (teenagers!!). But there is always hope for those creatures too.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
