Matt. 1:1-17

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 To Abraham was born Isaac; and to Isaac, Jacob; and to Jacob, Judah and his brothers; 3 and to Judah were born Perez and Zerah by Tamar; and to Perez was born Hezron; and to Hezron, Ram; 4 and to Ram was born Amminadab; and to Amminadab, Nahshon; and to Nahshon, Salmon; 5 and to Salmon was born Boaz by Rahab; and to Boaz was born Obed by Ruth; and to Obed, Jesse; 6 and to Jesse was born David the king. And to David was born Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah; 7 and to Solomon was born Rehoboam; and to Rehoboam, Abijah; and to Abijah, Asa; 8 and to Asa was born Jehoshaphat; and to Jehoshaphat, Joram; and to Joram, Uzziah; 9 and to Uzziah was born Jotham; and to Jotham, Ahaz; and to Ahaz, Hezekiah; 10 and to Hezekiah was born Manasseh; and to Manasseh, Amon; and to Amon, Josiah; 11 and to Josiah were born Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 And after the deportation to Babylon, to Jeconiah was born Shealtiel; and to Shealtiel, Zerubbabel; 13 and to Zerubbabel was born Abihud; and to Abihud, Eliakim; and to Eliakim, Azor; 14 and to Azor was born Zadok; and to Zadok, Achim; and to Achim, Eliud; 15 and to Eliud was born Eleazar; and to Eleazar, Matthan; and to Matthan, Jacob; 16 and to Jacob was born Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the time of Christ fourteen generations. NAS

Just as the Old Testament begins the testimony of Christ with the genealogy of Christ's deity, namely God the Son and His counterparts God the Father and the Spirit, so now Matthew begins the first book of the New Testament with the traditional lineage of Christ the son of David the son of Abraham as promised long ago to both Abraham and to David.

The Christ, son of Abraham, was not to be the immediate son of Abraham but 42 generations later lasting through about two thousand years of history. Just as Abraham came after Adam about two thousand years. And today we are an additional two thousand years after Christ's first advent and birth.

Matthew further lists them in groups of 14 generations. The first being the rise of the house of David from Abraham to David and the anointing of a King and a dynasty. Then he lists the next 14 generations that lived in luster and prosperity even though primarily due to the wealth of David and Solomon, up until the deportation of Judah. And then the last 14 generations which saw the decline of the line of David to a state from the deportation to poverty and Christ being born to the family of a poor carpenter.

Through all of this history, Satan has tried his best to destroy God's plan, by attacking the human race, the line of Abraham, then the line of David, then the family of Joseph the husband of Mary who was the mother of Jesus. Now note one important thing here. Mary was not the mother of God. God does not have a momma. But Mary was selected for her role in giving birth to Jesus the humanity of Christ. A tremendous blessing for sure, but blessings come to all regardless of their status or their failures in life, if they seek God and spiritual growth. No individual is greater nor lesser than any other person because of the earthly blessings received. The status of your soul is the issue, not your worldly assets or titles or such. Mary is not deity, so we do not pray to her. She cannot hear you anyway.

Throughout the genealogy, Matthew reviews the people who stand in that line. Some had great spiritual successes, and some did not. Some are mentioned by name and some are left out. Namely Ishmael and Esau are excluded though they were sons of Abraham and Isaac respectively, they were not believers and were excluded from mention. Unbelievers are never a part of Gods eternal plan. By their own choice they will be excluded from heaven in the last judgment.

There were four women mentioned which is unusual since the traditional listing of a genealogy follows the line of the male child only, yet these remarkable women stood in the gap and pursued God with tremendous wisdom and courage despite their individual circumstances. Tamar and Bathsheba were both adulteress women. But God does not look at your failures regardless of what they might be. God instead looks at the content of your soul and your attitude toward doctrine. Anyone can fail horribly in life, making mistake after mistake, however if at anytime they turn to God, they can recover and advance in their spiritual life to a position of greatness, which can only come from God.

Rahab was a lady of the night. She had been around the block and new how to entertain the gents, for a price of course. Yet she made the remarkable recovery for God and doctrine and married and had the child Boaz. She was a Canaanite woman and outside the race of the Hebrews. The religious types seemed to have forgot this when they tried to preserve the purity of the race, at least in their own minds. Note that throughout all of history there is no pure race. Too much time and too any wars, and too much movement of peoples in this world have intermingled every race in some way or another. If you could lay out your own DNA against that of your ancestors you probably would find quite a mixture in your 'pure' blood. Perhaps a little or a lot of so called off color blood mixed in somewhere along the way. Don't worry, you'll live. Your life is in your soul, not in your genes. Ruth, likewise, was a Moabite woman. God did not limit the line of Christ to just the Jewish race. The line was based on His plan first, and those who demonstrated positive volition toward the coming Messiah, thus believing in Christ and being saved in the same fashion that we all have been saved.

Three men were left out of the listing, though included in the line of Christ. They were between the line of Joram to Ozias, and they were Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah. Each of these three were disgusting individuals and they all fell to murder after apostate lives. Though they were a part of the line of Christ they were not worthy of being listed in this genealogy.

The time frame was some 2000 years. God demonstrates His wisdom and faithfulness in keeping His promises and accomplishing His purpose despite the volition of Satan, of man, and of the instabilities of this world. Satan could not control a world of dinosaurs, with few if any problems in contrast. Below is the genealogy of Christ as listed by Matthew, from Abraham who received the promise of a son, down to Joseph the husband of Mary. Note that the Bible calls Jesus the one who was born from Mary and not the son of Joseph. Though both Joseph and Mary came from the same tribe, Judah, the line on the male side stops at Joseph. Joseph did not have sex with Mary to produce Jesus. Jesus was conceived in Mary via a virgin pregnancy. The line from David, actually from Adam, down to Mary on her side is given in Luke 3.
