Mark 16:10-11
Lesson # Mark 16:10-11
Study Material - Mark 16:10-11
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Mark 16:10-11 10 And she [ekeinos] went [poreuomai] and told [apaggello] them that had been [ginomai] with [meta] him [autos] , as they mourned [pentheo] and [kai] wept [klaio] . 11 And they [kakeinos] , when they had heard [akouo] that [hoti] he was alive [zao] , and [kai] had been seen [theaomai] of [hupo] her [autos] , believed not [apisteo] . KJV-Interlinear 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11 And when they heard that He was alive, and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. NASB
Luke 24:9-12
9 and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11 And these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. 12 [But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at that which had happened.] NASB
John 20:18
18 Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that He had said these things to her. NASB
The women came back to where the disciples were staying. They reported all that had happened to them. Luke reports that Peter then ran to the tomb, looked inside and then came back to their residence marveling or wondering about what had or was happening. The other gospels suggest that it was earlier when Mary Magdalene came to get them, that Peter and John went running to the tomb, and then Mary followed them back again. Since some original manuscripts apparently do not have this verse in Luke, then we will stick with the original concept.
But regardless, it was only John who believed when he saw the burial cloths on the table, as none of the other disciples believed the story. They considered it nonsense, as is stated above.
Not only did they consider it nonsense, but the text indicates that they kept on refusing to believe the women. It would be apparent that the women kept on trying to convince them all of what they saw and heard.
Why would they disbelieve? Well they probably heard of, or might even have seen from a distance, the condition of Jesus after His beatings and then the crucifixion. No one could possibly have survived that kind of beating and suffering. Let alone go into the grave for three days, having been wrapped tightly in those burial linens, and without food and water in a totally stressed physical state, and then come back from the dead. Even Lazarus was not that badly beaten up when he was revived. Right?
But then wasn't Lazarus brought back from the dead? What exactly does that mean? To be brought back from the dead. Death is a separation, a separation from some type of functionality to some other type of non-functional existence. When we die our soul leaves our body, thus we should know that we have at least two components within us - body and soul. The body is merely a vessel, a biological one which houses our soul. Further, we know that our soul is another separate vessel which houses our human life.
When we die, our soul with its human life, leaves our body and departs from this world or from this realm. The body remains behind and decays. For believers in Christ there is one more component and that is the human spirit which is yet a third separate vessel, and the life contained therein is eternal life. In the believer, the soul and spirit, both vessels, are united together and become inseparable, and travel together to wherever they go after our physical death. In those days they went to Paradise. Today in our age, they go straight to heaven to be face to face with the Lord.
To bring a person back to life then, the soul and spirit (for a believer) must be brought back to a functional body. If the body is like the ones we currently have (flesh and blood) then that is called resuscitation. You are as you were before death. You continue in life and then die again. If the return of the soul and spirit are into a new body indestructible, then we call that resurrection. Thus far in history only Jesus Christ has been resurrected. The next resurrection will occur at the Rapture.
Now the disciples walked with Jesus Christ for three years plus. They were with Him daily, and heard Him speak. They saw miracles that defy the imagination. And now that they have heard first hand of the miracle of His own resurrection, and they do not believe.
You and I live over nineteen centuries after all of this happened, and yet you and I believe in Christ even though we have not seen any of these things. Does that make us any better than they? No. Because it is not the apostles who will make or break the spread of Christianity. If it were up to them alone, then Christianity would never have gotten off the ground.
And that is one of the lessons we need to learn here. The apostles though they will eventually get their act together, are not the root of Christianity, nor are they to be considered super-saints or anything like that. It is God and God alone who speaks to each one of us, and it is God and God alone who makes history and life become real to each one of us.
The apostles, the women, the others who followed Jesus, none of them were expecting the resurrection. If there were any people who were expecting the resurrection, then they remain in the background and just believed and let God do His work. But we aren't introduced to anyone else. We are only given the details of those who followed and should have believed, but did not. We are given the facts concerning those who should have listened to the teaching of Christ, but they didn't listen.
The women passed on the instructions that Jesus had given them, namely that the apostles should go immediately to Galilee and there they would see Him. But they did not even heed these instructions.
The morning activities are about over. The group will break up and some of them will leave to go elsewhere. That will be the time of the next appearance of Christ - on the road to Emmaus. But again, none of the eleven will be a part of this third appearance of Jesus. Would you care to venture a guess as to why the eleven have not seen Jesus yet? We'll save that for tomorrow, and then finally get to some very important principles of doctrine which are pertinent to your life.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
