Lesson # Mark 1:29-34 Study Material - Mark 1:29-34 You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. Mark 1:29-34 29 And immediately after they had come out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Him about her. 31 And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. 32 And when evening had come, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city had gathered at the door. 34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. Ok. This is a Sabbath day, and Jesus is healing people right and left. But after the sun had set you'll notice. Jesus left the synagogue, for that was where He was teaching when He had the encounter with the demon possessed man. He went from there to the home of Peter and Andrew and healed Peter's mother-in-law. Then after the sun had set, and this is important because the Jewish day runs from sunset to sunset. So probably after 6 pm the sun was setting and the Sabbath day had ended. People then came to the home of Peter and brought their sick with them. Work was prohibited on the Sabbath, per Moses. And the priests were quick to point this out in later passages. A violation of the Mosaic Law, and of course a distortion of the Law in its intended purpose. God had commanded the Jews to not work on the Sabbath, on the Jubilee year, and they really never did obey any of these commands, but it became a ritualistic distortion for the priests to condemn people for working on the Sabbath. Of course work was defined in a general way so that it may or may not include a given activity. The people of the city apparently heeded this command and did not bring their sick to the house until after dusk. Jesus reputation was in the healing arts, more so than His teaching. People wanted physical or mental relief more than they wanted spiritual growth. But God is gracious. Jesus healed any and all despite their motives. Jesus healed and gave strength at the same time. The mother-in-law had a fever, and normally when you get over the flu, you are somewhat weak. A person is generally down an extra day so that the fever will not return. But Jesus not only took the fever away but restored her strength as well. So Bible doctrine removes and replaces the impurities in your soul with health and strength. God does not remove weakness to give weakness and leave one open to sin's attack, but gives strength to prohibit the return of sin into ones life. He places the mechanism and the means. We have but only to believe and utilize it appropriately, and that is the function of fellowship. The mother-in-law rose up to serve Christ immediately. That is the picture of our service to God when we return to fellowship after being in the sphere of the sin nature or our fever of the soul as it were. Restoration to fellowship is immediate when one confesses in the correct fashion, that is, naming ones sins to God the Father in the privacy of your own soul. Remember that confession is between you and God only. It is no one else's business. Jesus continued healing and casting out demons. We probably will never see a demon possessed person in our entire life, but the spiritual status, of this generation of Christ , was apparently so low, that there was a significant number of possessed people. Nevertheless, Jesus cast them out right and left. One can just see the demons flying out right and left. Jesus did not permit them to speak.. No more misleading debates to confuse the people. The demons have deceitful intentions anyway and this was not allowed to come out and create even more confusion. Jesus continued reinforcing His power over not only the demons, but over every known disease and illness. There was nothing brought to Him that He could not heal. Christ is the Word of God. We have that Word now, therefore we have Christ in us when we learn His Word. His power is just as effective now as it was then, but we need to realize that Christ's power in not intended to cure disease only, but to heal and strengthen your soul. To bring you to spiritual maturity. To heal your ills in life and then send you on your way does you no good in the long term. And life is intended for the long term into eternity, not just for this current generation here on earth. Illness and demonism are reflections of the sin natures way of life. This is a picture of our life when we are out of fellowship. It is a dead end, useless to ones long term objective, and can only weaken ones life, never strengthening it. Sin must be silenced, therefore we replace its production in our soul (the thinking of human viewpoint), with the spiritual viewpoint. With Bible doctrine. Continual daily study keeps Bible doctrine in the forefront of our minds, and keeps us on our toes spiritually. When we get away from our daily Bible study, then we expose ourselves to sin and its control over our life.
