Lesson # Mark 1:27-28
Study Material - Mark 1:27-28
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Mark 1:27-28
27 And they were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, 'What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.' 28 And immediately the news about Him went out everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
They were amazed, 'thambeo', to stupefy (with surprise), astound, amaze, astonish. And they debated, 'suzeteo', to investigate jointly, discuss, controvert, find fault unnecessarily, dispute, inquire, question, reason.
They were totally taken by surprised. They did not know how to interpret what they had just witnessed, and even argued over what was witnessed. What was this encounter? No. The question was not of the demon being ordered out of the man, but there were comments regarding that. The questions were of the teaching which Christ was giving. Apparently He did accomplish teaching something before being interrupted by the demon possessed man.
A new teaching, with authority? Now where had they been all of their lives. Every Sabbath, every Saturday, and even at the annual feasts, these people had for years read from Isaiah, from Moses and the prophets. They had read the very same words that you and I read in his Bible study when we are in the Old Testament. But I guess confusion is not unexpected when unbelievers or negative believers read the Bible.
Absent fellowship or even a human spirit, any person lacks the means of correctly interpreting and understanding Gods Word. So debates arise. This is why we have so many views in religion today. Just as they had many different views in their time. The world today has many different philosophies in non-Christian religions such as Hindu, Islam and such, as well as different views or opinions in the many denominations in Christianity and in Catholicism. So we are not so different as they were in that day nearly 2000 years ago.
Here standing before them is the Son of God. One would think that they would bend their knees and place their faces in the dust. That is something that will occur at the rapture, when many millions who are caught up in the clouds will kneel and bow with immediate impulse, without question, with immediate recognition of Christ and His authority, and with immediate understanding and comprehension of what is happening when it happens.
But here in the synagogue, a place designated for the worship of God, a place where the following words are repeated over and over again, week after week, year after year, Deu. 6:4, 'Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!' After centuries of prophecies specifying the date of His birth. And even now they question not only what Jesus has said, but they question the 'newness' of what he says. As though they had never hear of such a thing as the gospel, believe on the Son of God, the Savior, the man who would be called deliverer. They were waiting for the new kingdom of God to come. They were expecting God to come down and wipe out the Romans and establish His kingdom here on earth, and of course making them high ranking officials in this new kingdom. Boy, then those gentiles would see the real power of Israel. Boy oh Boy!!!
But they were of course all wet with this attitude and totally out of line. Here standing before them was a man ordering the demon and the demon complied immediately. Here was a man speaking with authority, knowing what He was saying and backing it up, and it seemed to make sense, that is, to some degree for many. And for those many who found 'some' reasonableness in His words, they also found room for debate. Debate based on what? Their generalizing of their many opinions. False logic stacked upon false logic. False interpretation of the scriptures stacked upon false interpretation. They did not understand that which they had been reading for these many years, therefore they could not reach any correct conclusions.
So what news was spread throughout the district? The Gospel of Christ? No. The debate was spread. The controversy. Who was this Jesus. What good could possibly come out of Nazareth? 'Everybody' knows that nothing good comes out of Nazareth!!! This demon stuff. Real? Magic? What?
And they of course forget the miracles that have already occurred over the last few months. This will set the stage for Jesus' leaving the cities and remaining out in the countryside for a time. But the people will still come. Some for Bible study, most for the healings.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
