Study Material - Parables of Christ - Mustard Seed - Luke 13:18-19
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Mustard Seed Luke 13:18-19 18 Then [de] said he [lego] , Unto what [tis] is [esti] the kingdom [basileia] of God [theos] like [homoios] ? and [kai] whereunto [tis] shall I resemble [homoioo] it [autos] ? 19 It is [esti] like [homoios] a grain [kokkos] of mustard seed [sinapi] , which [hos] a man [anthropos] took [lambano] , and cast [ballo] into [eis] his [heautou] garden [kepos] ; and [kai] it grew [auxano] , and [kai] waxed [ginomai] [eis] a great [megas] tree [dendron] ; and [kai] the fowls [peteinon] of the air [ouranos] lodged [kataskenoo] in [en] the branches [klados] of it [autos] . KJV-Interlinear 18 Therefore He was saying, 'What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 'It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree; and the birds of the air nested in its branches.' NASB
Matt. 13:31-32
31 He presented another parable to them, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is smaller than all other seeds; but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.'
NASB
Mark 4:30-32
30 And He said, 'How shall we picture the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it? 31 'It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, 32 yet when it is sown, grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that the birds of the air can nest under its shade. ' NASB
Here is the eighth parable we are studying in this series. We have not forgotten the Wheat and the Tares (which we began but have not yet finished). We will get back to it shortly.
The mustard seed is an extremely small seed. When compared to the seeds of other agriculture crops like corn or wheat or barley, the mustard seed is the smallest of them all. When grown, the mustard plant of the Middle East rises to between 12 and 15 feet in height. So as far as garden or ag crops go, the mustard seed begins as the smallest seed and rises to become the greatest plant in the garden.
Here are the disciples listening to Jesus and hearing of all the barriers to Gods Kingdom on planet earth. If people are generally negative, if the rules of the world, Satan, are in a constant attack on planet earth (the sewing of the tares in amongst the good seed), then how can such a limited number of positive believers with so great of odds against them, ever survive on planet earth?
The mustard seed is small and has no earthly chance of survival, yet it grows to be tall and broad. Not only does is grow to become the tallest plant in the garden, but it brings blessings for all that live in the garden (the birds and such).
The garden and nature might be set against the seed, but God overrules and brings forth its growth. There is no revenge on the enemies of the seed, but when grown, the mustard plant becomes a home and source of food and protection to all (believers and unbelievers alike). All are blessed because of the grace of God.
God is the source of good, and only good comes from God. In the previous parable God sows the good seed. He did not sow the bad seed. His enemy does that. Satan began in the Garden when he played a little deceitful game with Eve. And Satan has played his little game throughout history. He is the father of deceit, the father of lies. All things bad came into the world from Satan.
Satan has an overwhelming army, and his army is active throughout the world. Satan has a huge demon army currently imprisoned in the Abyss. They are the badest of the bad. Even Satan's fallen angels who work against mankind fear to be sent into the Abyss. The army of the Abyss will not be released from their imprisonment until the Tribulation, and that will be a very bad time for mankind.
Anyway, such are the odds against Christians in this world. On our own, and there are those who think that they can do better on their own, but on our own, each person would fail and fail miserably in life. We as humans are powerless in life. We can't know what the weather will do from one week to the next, we can't control the world economies, and we certainly can't control things that we can't even see or detect (spiritual phenomena). So the idea that a person can do better on their own is the idea of fools.
The idea that by believing in Christ and pursuing a daily Bible study is somehow surrendering your freedom and self determination is also a fools conclusion. When a person is out in the wilderness and totally lost, wouldn't it be nice to have a guide, a map, supplies, a compass? Of course, and any fool would gladly accept the wisdom of an expert guides advice. But there are those who are dumber than fools and they would go it alone in the desert without supplies. Their end is obvious, to all with any sense at all. They die miserably.
The desert is all around each of us, and our odds of survival are low (on our own), but with God in our life, then we are elevated out of the desert (fellowship) and placed inside the safety of His fortress (birds safe in the tree) and provided for with all of His abundance (blessings provided by the tree), and of course we have not finished all of these parables, but in the end we will be collected into heaven and an eternal garden so to speak, and all the dead wood will be removed and burned for all of eternity. But as for unbelievers, then their suffering will be bad, very bad, and it will last forever.
Why would someone refuse to believe in Christ and risk such a great miserable life in eternity?
Likewise, why then would believers refuse to advance in their spiritual life and miss out on an abundance of blessings beyond their imagination? Though the odds are against us as individuals, through the support of God in our lives, those bad odds become certain guarantees.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
