Luke 5:14-16
Lesson # Luke 5:14-16
Study Material - Luke 5:14-16
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Luke 5:14-16
14 And He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.' 15 But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and great multitudes were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But He Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.
Leprosy was a common disease in those days. Someone being cured of leprosy was rare. When this event occurred, the cure of leprosy in their body, then they were to go immediately to the priest and follow the offerings prescribed in Lev. 14. Prior to this all lepers were segregated from the rest of society as per Lev. 13.
Both of these represent the act of sin in our lives. When we are filled with sin, and it takes only one sin to keep us separated from God, then we are prevented, by that sin, from entering into worship, or from having any kind of meaningful relationship with God.
Filth, uncleanness, the various taboos that were prescribed in the Old Testament taught this principle. The various taboos of eating certain foods too, teach this principle. That is of what one takes into his soul.
Food in itself is not wrong, but self righteous people who disregard the Bible principles taught, tend to make up their own rules and interpretations, and those ideas are total misapplications of the principles taught in the Bible regarding the spiritual life.
We have already seen the rules for not working on the Sabbath. This rest relates to the attainment of spiritual maturity. God does all the work in our life. We do nothing to gain the blessings that God offers us. Does this mean we can quit our job? No. Follow more closely. The spiritual life is grace driven. It is the work of God solely, not of our own works. No boasting is allowed in the spiritual life. We cannot attain salvation due to our own efforts. We cannot attain spiritual maturity due to our own efforts. These are all due to the work and function of God. Review the charts on the soul of the believer and the soul of the unbeliever on the Index page. Grace is the function of our spiritual growth. Any unbeliever can study as you do, but the difference between the unbeliever and the believer is the function of the human spirit.
The spiritual life is a private matter between the believer and God. Everyone of us enters into the spiritual life through our personal belief in Christ. Each one of us grows up spiritually by our personal Bible study on a daily basis. No one else can do these two things for us. We have to do them ourselves.
The man was directed to go to the priest and offer himself as a testimony. Repeat, a testimony for the cleansing of the leprosy. In the Old Testament Miriam and Naaman are recorded as the pattern for leprosy cleansing. Since this is rare, the priest would know that when someone came to him, and that someone had been a known leper, and now was cured, then something was up. It would be the responsibility of the priest to investigate the nature of the cleansing, and to follow through with the appropriate offering and recognition of the one who caused the cleansing. Only God can cleanse, therefore Christ was God. This should have been apparent to the priests of that day. They were for the most part unbelievers, therefore they missed the whole lesson.
The first priority of Bible doctrine is to lead people to faith in Christ and thus salvation. Without that no person has any hope of any kind. Once saved, then salvation is no longer an issue in their spiritual life. Their priority is now spiritual growth. That requires a consistent daily 'habit' of Bible study.
The man was commanded to go to the priest. There was the place for his new beginning. Son and death had been put away and he was now born again, as it were. The source of growth was now from the source of doctrine represented by the priest. The man of course did not obey this command, and the rumors continued to spread concerning the healing powers of Jesus.
Jesus goes off and prays. Often times people are so screwed up in their own minds that they just mix things up. Prayer is the only thing that will help them. This is not really a blonde joke, but that concept applies. Ever see people round about you that you wonder just how they make it in life? Grace is the obvious answer. Confused folks, or those that are a little light upstairs become a very good teaching principle of us all. Mankind is light upstairs in the brain. Were it not for Gods grace, none of us would exist, nor could we survive in life.
The man with leprosy is a picture of our life prior to salvation, or our life absent Bible doctrine. The Bible is a mirror which we can look into and see our true self. If we see the leprosy, then we see the truth and have opportunity to fix our life. If we see beauty, then we are blind in our ego, and opportunity may slip by without our noticing. We, each of us, judge and evaluate our own self. We do not evaluate others spiritually.
Jesus prayed to whom? Himself? No. To the angels? No. To other Old Testament believers? No. There is only one target to which prayer is to be directed - God the Father. The Father alone is the recipient of prayer, not Jesus, not Mary, not Joseph, not the angel Michael, certainly not images of stone or animals. All prayer is directed to God the Father, no one else and nothing else. All prayer is to be offered while in fellowship Otherwise it is simply not heard. All prayer that is offered is to be consistent with Gods plan for your personal life and with His plan for history overall To ask God to come and establish the Kingdom right now would be contrary to His plan for history. That prayer would be denied of course.
Bible doctrine gives us spiritual growth, and through that growth, comes understanding and discernment. Patience should rule in your life. We cannot learn the entire realm of doctrine in a night. It is a life long process. There are no short cuts available.
The man was cured of leprosy (principle of salvation taught through the faith he expressed) and should have gone to the priest (principle of Bible study) and begun his spiritual life. Once saved your life is not concluded, but only beginning - again.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
