Luke 3:3-4
Lesson # Luke 3:3-4
Study Material - Luke 3:3-4
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Luke 3:3-4
3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight.
John now came out from concealment where God had kept him for these thirty years, and he entered the area of the Jordan where some 1500 years earlier Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan in their first conquests of the promised land. Now a different conquest was about to be presented, the gospel of Christ.
John came evangelizing, preaching the coming of the Christ, and the repentance necessary for the forgiveness of sins. So what is the repentance? Is it feeling sorry? No. Is it doing things for God? No. Is it confessing to the public just how bad you are as a person? No. So what is it. It is the changing of your mind. Changing your attitude toward God and more specifically the gospel of Christ.
It is hearing the gospel, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Believing and only believing in Christ is the only way of salvation. It is the only door through which we can enter into our eternal life with God.
John baptized with water as a symbolic action to help teach the work of Christ on the Cross. To believe in Christ is to enter into His death and resurrection jointly with Him. To go below the water represents death. To be raised out of the water represents His resurrection. And this is a teaching aid to help the people learn and understand just what Christ was going to accomplish on the Cross. The baptism in itself did not save anyone. Otherwise anyone could jump in a pool and claim salvation.
Baptism taught the cleansing of sins away from ones life, just as the washing of the Mosaic Law had taught for many centuries. The priests were going through this ritual daily and yet they were still unbelievers. Water cannot save. And by the way there is no such thing as holy water either. Anything that man can do from his own energy and effort does not have any place in salvation. Salvation is the work of Christ alone and His work belongs to no one else. Human works were rejected at the Cross. Only Gods work was accepted.
As it is written, speaks for itself. This had been written in the scriptures for centuries. Isaiah was quoted and he lived hundreds of years before this time, and thousands before our current time. Even Enoch was listed in Jude, as a great Bible teacher, and he lived long before the flood. So this information was not new. Yet the priests were failures in their custodial duties regarding the scriptures. They had not even known the true meaning of the very words they read day after day all of their lives. Unbelievers can not know the true meaning of the scriptures, not until they believe in the savior and then, with their human spirit newly regenerated in them, will they have the potential of learning Bible doctrine. Just as we all do.
The voice crying in the wilderness is the voice of God, calling to each of us in our world of sin. When we are born into this world we are spiritually dead and lost to eternal condemnation, trapped by our slavery to death and our separation from God. But only by the grace of God is a solution provided.
Make ready the way of the Lord, is to believe and prepare your soul for His Word. We make ready our soul by believing in Christ. This gives us a human spirit and therefore the mechanism for learning Bible doctrine. In our human spirit is imputed eternal life, just as human life is imputed into our soul at the point of our physical birth. This is the second birth, the born again concept, but this time not born of flesh, now we are born of the spirit.
And straightens out the crooked paths we have in our life controlled by our sin nature. The sin nature does everything on a relative basis. Whatever seems right, is right to the sin nature. Morals change with the weather. If you are strong you rule. If you are weak, you are ruled. If you have money, you have some comforts. If you don't have money, you don't enjoy the comforts. Life is unfair to all, and problems are always on the horizon. You can never depend on the energy of this world. It can't save you. It can't prevent your death.
Only Bible doctrine can straighten out the mess that the sin nature causes. Beginning with the gospel and then followed up with spiritual growth. Once saved, your spiritual life does not suddenly come to an end. It only begins. After salvation then your goal and objective is spiritual maturity and that comes only with daily study of Bible doctrine.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
