Lesson # John 4:11-14
Study Material - John 4:11-14
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
John 4:11-14
11 She said to Him, 'Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 'You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?' 13 Jesus answered and said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life. '
The woman has her eyes on things. People who lack Bible doctrine can only see the tangible. They fail to see the spiritual. Jesus was speaking in figurative terms relating to spiritual truths. But the woman was stuck on the things she could see, touch, feel, etc.
She draws wrong conclusions in her determination of Jesus' inability to draw water. Here she is talking to the creator of the universe, the person who is holding the universe together. The one who could command the water to rise to the surface without any human tools, but she is still in the dark as to what he has to say. Only when his conversation takes on a different approach when He reveals His knowledge of her, then does she begin to see, but just bearly. The Lord does not depend on human weapons to fulfill His plans, He works without regard to human means. Mankind in its natural condition of slavery to death and the things of this world, can see only as far as his own abilities. Current technological advances make it seem that man has significant abilities, but our efforts are still confined to the physical world around us. God, on the other hand, invented and defined every law of nature that we have recently discovered, and more. God is not limited by creation.
Certainly the water in the well may be deep, but the wisdom of God is boundless. And the repercussions of a positive attitude toward God are eternal. To believe in Christ means eternal life and a life in heaven forever. To reject Christ means eternal condemnation and a life apart from God, in the fires of hell. That is a pretty dramatic difference. The well water can do nothing but give transient satisfaction, then the thirst will return again and again, never being quenched.
Here attitude toward the well has some peculiarities too. She calls it the well of Jacob. Though no well is ever documented in the Old Testament. She also calls Jacob her father, referring to the ancestry of the Samaritans, yet the Samaritans were a hodgepodge of peoples coming out of the poor peoples, left by the Assyrians, to live in the land, when the ten tribes fell to conquest centuries earlier. These peoples adopted some of the Jewish practices, but did not embrace them correctly. They tried to build a competing temple as well, which did not go over to well with the Jews of Judah. So even from the get go, the doctrinal correctness of these peoples was in error.
The woman lacked good historical accuracy in what she knew, or thought she knew. But whether accurate or not, history is not a replacement for Bible doctrine learned in the present. Someone else's life, the lives of your ancestors, cannot save you, and they do not carry any weight with respect to eternity. Falling back on ones heritage, culture, color, race, religion, family ties or what have you is an empty pursuit, and an arrogant one. There is not single family or line which surpasses all others. We all originated from Adam. And since Adam, we have gone down hill as a human race. No person or group has been able to reinstate us to Gods grace, as Adam was in prior to his fall. Only God himself could do that. And He accomplished that at the Cross. Man had no part in it.
A soul filed with doctrine, springs forth its own water, or production in ones spiritual life. As soul, so filled with doctrine which is applied to ones daily life advances towards its own perfection, spiritual maturity. A soul so filled to the point of overflowing receives crowns of accomplishment, which are eternal crowns, whose origin is heaven and whose destination is heaven. No water on this earth can do this.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
