John 1:40-42

Lesson # John 1:40-42
Study Material - John 1:40-42

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

John 1:40-42

40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He found first his own brother Simon, and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which translated means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, 'You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas' (which is translated Peter).

One of the two was Andrew, manly, mighty, conqueror. He is the first of the apostles introduced in John and the first chronologically introduced throughout the gospels (MML&J). His occupation was that of fisherman. He was from Bethsaida in Galilee. He was the brother of Simon-Peter and he brought Peter to Christ initially. His father was John.

Andrew had two callings. The first was at this time when John the Baptist directed his attention to Jesus, the Son of God, the Lamb of God. Andrew stayed with and associated with Jesus for a short while, then returned to his occupation of fisherman, then was called again after the arrest of John the Baptist, for the remainder of the ministry of Jesus.

Andrew's name has greek origins, but he was a Jew, indicating that Jesus was here for all peoples not just one race, and the future transition of the custody of the faith into the gentile hands as the Jewish peoples were going to be disbursed in a dramatic way in just about 40 more years.

Andrew introduced his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus already knew Simon's name and renamed him from Simon, (obedient, harkening, listening), to Peter, rock or stone. Andrew went and found his brother and brought him to Jesus. He stated that the 'Messiah' had been found. Andrew knew some scripture, and had been listening to John. He put two and two together and concluded that Jesus was the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God.

Peter was brought to Jesus, and Jesus identified Peter before Peter could speak. God knows those who belong to Him. We do not have to first make inquiry, but only believe in Him, Christ. Subsequent to that we belong to God and He can readily identify us. God renamed Simon to Peter. God gives each of us a new name in heaven when we believe in Christ. On earth we have a name given us by our parents or someone, in case you never knew your parents. But in heaven we have a new name given us by God, and that name is eternal and permanent. All that God does and sanctions is permanent. No one can remove it from us. No one can take away that which God has given.

John, whom I believe is the other person with Andrew, has a name whose name means grace, Lord has favored. We reviewed that name when we studied the birth of John the Baptist. So far we have the introduction of Jesus' interaction with the first apostles. John, grace. Andrew, conqueror, Peter, rock.

God gives us grace to mankind and to all who follow Him. God will conqueror sin and death and all who oppose Him. God established His Word as a rock, a foundation on which we can all rely, unmoveable and sure.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
