Lesson # John 1:35-39 Study Material - John 1:35-39 You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. John 1:35-39 35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked upon Jesus as He walked, and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God!' 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned, and beheld them following, and said to them, 'What do you seek?' And they said to Him, 'Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?' 39 He said to them, 'Come, and you will see.' They came therefore and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. We see some of the contrast between John the Baptist and the Pharisees. John sought out to teach the gospel and bring people to Christ. The Pharisees sought to bring people to themselves for their own satisfaction in approbation lust. John taught the same gospel in private as he did in public. Here He spoke with two of his disciples, later identified as Andrew and another person. I think that other person was John the Apostle and the writer of this book. John regularly does not identify himself within this book until the very end of the book - 'the one whom Jesus loved'. Anyway, John the Baptist, who is not the same as John the Apostle, was talking with two of his followers. Two men who were interested in learning more about God. John was talking with them not to keep their attention to himself, but to direct their attention to Jesus, whom he saw at a distance. Jesus has already been in the desert and returned. The next couple of chapters in this book follow the events of Jesus prior to the arrest of John, and after that arrest, Jesus will collect his followers and select the apostles and we will see that in Matthew, Mark, and a list of the apostles in Luke 6. John identifies Jesus as the lamb of God, the same Jesus that he identified on the previous day, as the recipient of the descending Holy Spirit as a dove several weeks earlier when John baptized Jesus. John is consistent in his identification. Bible doctrine is consistent in its content. Doctrine is presented and those who hear will pursue it to learn more. The two went after Jesus immediately. They both had a deep desire for Gods Word. They came up from behind, but Jesus turned and looked at them and Jesus made the first inquiry. 'What do you seek?' What do you desire, what do you want, what are you looking for? God poses that question to all of us. What is it that we are looking for? And to be honest, we all probably do not know what it is we want, or need. Or perhaps we know what we want, we just don't know how to acquire it. Most want the hurting to go away, they want the insecurity to fade, but what to replace it with, and just how does God accomplish all of this, when we don't see miracles everyday, and most days just don't seem like anything is happening at all. So we are surrounded with big questions, big uncertainties. If we are positive, then we are open to instruction. So the two asked where He was staying. To know the location of God, means you can visit it frequently and get your questions answered. They referred to Jesus as teacher, so they were coming to Him with an open mind and wanted to be taught. They did not have their own agenda. They did not attempt to negotiate with Him. They did not come to Him with their own ideas. They did not come to Him and make promises, 'If you'll do this for us, we will never do this or that again', sort of stuff. We cannot tempt God. We cannot negotiate a better contract with God. We have to come to God without a portfolio, without our preconceived ideas and notions. That is probably the most difficult thing for us if we have been taught a lot of religious ritual in our lives. We have to be able to learn with an open mind, and be able to set aside those taboos. These two apostles had been with John the Baptist for some time probably, and they did not hesitate to follow Jesus when He was identified to them. They obviously enjoyed John's ministry, but did not confuse John's ministry with their own personal spiritual growth. They followed the true source of doctrine, which was Jesus Christ. They saw where Jesus was staying, and remained with Him that day. The tenth hour probably refers to the afternoon hour of 4:00. The Jewish days begin in the morning at 6 am, as far as their numbering the hours of the day. Actually their 24 hour day begins at sunset or at 6 pm and tuns until the next day at 6 pm. They will depart from Jesus but will be regathered later on. Jesus invited them to follow. God never demands anything of us. He gave us all volition so we could be free to choose one way or the other. God commands and warns and shows the repercussions of our decisions be they good or bad, but God never forces us in any direction. He teaches us with suffering, but we bring on the suffering generally with our own decisions. He teaches us with the tests of this world, to demonstrate that even in this imperfect world He can still bless us an bring any of us to spiritual maturity. And, too, to teach Satan and his comrades, that just by faith, man will choose God and rely on Him. Jesus invites us to learn and receive His teaching. If we follow Him daily in our Bible study, then we will learn. If we get distracted and veer off, then we will be enslaved by our sin nature and the world.
