John 1:9-13
9 There was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Light came into the world. Light has been here from the beginning of time. Where there is light, there is a clear line of vision. All can be seen with sufficient light, nothing is hidden. Jesus Christ is the light of the World. Jesus Christ is the incarnation of the Word of God. Since we do not have Him here in the flesh today, we are not left to fend for ourselves, because we have His written Word to illuminate us.
Light has more in it than meets the eye too. Light reveals because it illuminates things. It has actinic characteristics where it is neither seen nor felt, but it clearly exists because we can see things around us. Just because we cannot see light doesn't mean that it does not exist. The same principle applies to God. Light is luminiferous where it is both seen and felt. We see its colors and feel its heat and this certainly applies to the person of Jesus Christ who became man in the flesh and was both seen and felt by those who lived with him for nearly 3 ½ years. Light is calorific where it is not seen but is felt, and this is comparable to the Holy Spirit and His ministry of teaching us doctrine. We do not feel Him emotionally, but we can experience the knowledge and impact of our spiritual growth I our lives. We can feel better mentally. We are happier, less likely to fall apart in times of stress. We have poise and courage and are able to think under pressure.
Light has many characteristics that can be distinguished separately yet they are all one. So God can be described using light as the teaching aid. Light, Gods knowledge, Gods wisdom, Gods word has been here since Adam's time. Gods word has been here throughout the centuries of the Old Testament times. Finally Christ came into the world in His first advent as the light in the flesh, in the person of Jesus Christ.
Christ was in this world in the form of the scriptures, and then in the flesh. Christ existed before time and created the world with his spoken word. Despite all the things that point to a divine hand in creation, people, human beings, Israelites of His chosen race, did not receive him. From Cain to our present time, Gods Word has been readily available to all of mankind, yet a huge number of people reject or merely ignore God.
Even those who have believed in Him, have a tendency to go cold on doctrine and reject or ignore God later on in their life. Sometimes they come back to doctrine, sometimes not. Jesus Christ was rejected by His own race, the human race as well as the Israelites, the Jewish race. They should have celebrated His birth, but it went virtually unnoticed. They should have anticipated His birth, but most had totally missed the boat as to the time and purpose of His first advent.
To those who receive Him by means of believing in Him, by believing in His name, then they are known as Gods children. His name is many, King of kings, Lord of lords, Savior, Bright Morning Star, the Alpha and Omega, the first and last, the entire realm of scripture. Believing in Christ encompasses all this in the broad spectrum, but basically most people simply think of the Cross and that the one who went to the Cross was both God and man, but that is only the very tip of the ice burg. The vastness of doctrine is infinitely deep and broad. But to those who receive Him, those we call believers in Jesus Christ verses those who reject Him and do not believe that He is who He says He is. Many believe that Jesus was just another name in the history books. To those we refer as unbelievers. God accepts those who accept Him, and he takes them into His family as adopted sons, but not just adopted sons, as adopted first born sons with all the rights and privileges of the first born son. The double portion of inheritance, the tight to wear the ring of the family seal as was the custom in those ancient days. He who wore the ring of royalty had access to the wealth of the family treasury. And this access belongs to each of us as believers in Christ, as children of God. Note that the human race is not referred to as His children, only those believers. Cain elected to be known as son of man, but we as believers elect to be known as sons of God.
This privilege was not earned by any of us, was a gift for God for our mere expression of faith nothing more. You are not required to feel sorry for your sins. You are not required do some kind of penance. You are not required to walk down an isle, or raise your hand, or say 'praise God'. Your works are rejected by God. Do not try to dilute His perfect work with your imperfect add-ons.
Our birth into the family of God was not through the womb of woman, not from the will of your efforts in thought or philosophy, nor from your energy of your abilities. It is a spiritual birth, initiated by God through the gospel, acknowledged by man through faith, and sealed by God through the generation of a human spirit in the person believing followed by the imputation of eternal life into that human spirit. So now the believer is body, soul, and spirit. The body will be discarded and replaced by a resurrection body, the soul has human life in it from the point of physical birth, and the human spirit has eternal life imputed to it from the moment of belief in Jesus Christ.
All this comes from God, not from man, but God alone. Man's works and participation in Gods plan is totally rejected by God. God does all the work. God makes all the provisions. God accomplishes all the necessary components of our salvation and subsequent spiritual growth.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
