Lesson # John 1:1-5
Study Material - John 1:1-5
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
In general there are two concepts for the 'word'. The first is the conception of the word which is thought, and the second is the utterance of the word, or the spoken work. But here is another purpose of the 'Word', which is the Word of God and it is equated to Jesus Christ.
In the beginning which was not a beginning, in eternity past, is the reference to Gods Word. which was with Him and was Him. Gods Word preexisted all of creation, man, universe, and angels in reverse order. In time God uttered His Word and things came into existence. Gods Word is the basis and the foundation of all things. It is the platform on which everything sits. It is the source of all wisdom and knowledge. It includes the content of the scriptures and beyond. Gods knowledge is infinitely vast and no man, no creature, can begin to measure it.
God spoke His word to the early generations and to us in our current time, Heb. 1:2. We are commanded to listen to Gods Word, to Jesus Christ, Matt. 17:5. God preexisted all things and so was his Word, Psa. 90:2.
John establishes the source of all things in these first few verses. Copying the first verse of Genesis, 'In the beginning, God', and now equates His Word with the very essence of God, as well as equating the person of Jesus Christ as God.
The Word provides essence and substance in that it is equated with God. The Word provides contentment, Prov. 8:30, in the relationship it maintains with God. The Word provides and is the source of council and wisdom, Prov. 1. The Word provides design in Gods plan for mankind, 1 Pet. 3:18.
Psa. 33:6, all things were made by His Word. Christ is equated with God and was in existence since eternity past. All that is, was made by Him by His spoken word. He did not make things through or over a cycle of time as in evolution, nor as a laborer would construct something building on what was made before, layer at a time. But God made things as one would see them and in an instant, in a moment of time. Christ spoke a word and all things came into existence as described in Genesis, the Psalms, Isaiah, and in many other passages. God, Jesus Christ, the second person of the trinity, is the source of all creation and the executer of the action which caused all of creation.
The alternative is eliminated entirely. Nothing that exists was not created by another source. There is nothing in existence that He did not create. The possibility that we are all an accident in this universe, that the universe existed in a huge chunk and then suddenly blasted apart in a big bang thus creating the present universe over billions of years is rejected. God created all of the angelic realm first, then in their presence, He created the universe in a moment of time. Likewise God created man after He restored planet earth which had been destroyed by Satan by his rebellion. The notions of evolution are rejected as are the notions of idol worship. They have no basis in reality. Jere. 10:11, the false notions will perish along with all other false concepts in mans imagination.
Jesus Christ is life. Not only did He create all things, but He created all living things. The source of all life is God. Again the alternative is rejected. Life did not originate from mush, or an accidental collision of particles in outer space or at the bottom of some pit. And from His life comes light. The power that gives clarity and direction and purpose. God presented this light and it was rejected, first by the angels, Satan and those who followed him, and then by mankind. The opposite of light is no light. The opposite of true knowledge is false or deceptive knowledge. Out of the rejection is darkness and in darkness there is no clear view of reality. No clear understanding of the truth, of purpose, of cause and effect, of origin and destination.
Where darkness exists one cannot see, but when light shines it manifests itself to all. Light cannot be missed when contrasted against darkness. It is apparent to all. But those who choose darkness, choose to ignore the light, the truth of Gods Word, to those there is no understanding in this world. They reach false conclusions. They base all their thoughts on the things they only see, hear, touch, smell, taste. They limit themselves to the physical universe and deny the spiritual. No one can claim an excuse as to not knowing of the existence of God or of His gospel. His word, His light is all around and manifested in nearly everything in creation, Rom. 1:19-20. No one can live on this planet and not see or know of God in some form. God is even made known in swear words which are so profusely used throughout the world.
2 Cor. 3:13, even in the Old Testament, the Word as light is revealed, even veiled because of its passing away for a better light, Jesus Christ. The old scriptures speak of the savior and a relationship with God in all the sacrifices and offering rituals as teaching aids to help those who would be positive, to learn and grow up spiritually.
Rom. 1:21, but the degenerate world rejected God for their own imaginations and self made fantasies. Therefore, God came into this world to rescue man from himself. Mans plight is of his own doing. Each living person was born spiritually dead to God, but in life we have all made decisions contrary to God as well. The Bible needs to be viewed in its entirety, not just in isolated verses or the extraction of a few things we happen to like and the rejection of those things we do not like. Gods Word is not here for our convenient selective use, but it provides a comprehensive plan for our lives, for our relationship with God, for our deliverance from total destruction. Spiritual things cannot be understood apart from the spiritual mechanics of learning and growing God has provided us. This of course begins with salvation and the receiving of a human spirit at that moment in our life. The human spirit is the component which receives eternal life and will carry us into eternity and into heaven. The human spirit is also the mechanism for our link with God, providing the means of reception of His Word into our soul. Review the appropriate image charts on the Index page. All spiritual information is communicated from Spirit, God the Holy Spirit, to spirit, mans human spirit. Though the words on the written page can be read and heard by anyone, only the believer who is positive and in fellowship can understand and benefit from the spiritual component of Gods Word. Apart from fellowship and a human spirit, Gods Word is just another book on the shelf collecting dust, which by the way, is what man is made from, useless dust as the book is useless on the shelf. Only in the soul does doctrine become valuable.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
