You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Heb. 11:30
30 By faith [pistis] the walls [teichos] of Jericho [Hiericho] fell down [pipto], after they were compassed [kukloo] about [epi] seven [hepta] days [hemera]. KJV-Interlinear
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days. NASB
Faith is absolute confidence based on wisdom obtained from a consistent daily study of the Word of God. Faith trusts completely in God. Faith trusts God based solely on His word. Faith seeks no proof of truth. Truth is self evident.
Lack of faith seeks proof. Lack of faith seeks signs or miracles, or something that goes beyond Gods Word, to prove itself. Doubt looks for proof.
A person has only two options in life to orient to life. We either trust in our own intellect, our own instincts, our own beliefs, or we trust in Gods Word.
John 20:29
29 Jesus said to him, 'Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.' NASB
Anything that demands more than that which is provided in Gods Word, is not faith, but is a strong indicator of spiritual deficiency.
The Israelites crossed the Red Sea. They saw the entire Egyptian army destroyed in a matter of minutes. They saw many miraculous events. They should have been able to march directly to Canaan (the promised land) in a matter of days. But it took them forty years.
They wandered in the desert wasting away as an entire generation, which lacked faith, died without ever entering into the promised land (spiritual maturity). The blessings were there for all to see. The power to fulfill those blessings was always evident. The Israelites, like so many people even in our current generation, were reluctant to cross over the faith barrier and place their trust and their life, in Gods hands.
After all, our daily rituals of working and hustling, and depending on our own judgment, seem more real than simply trusting in something that resides on the edge of the unknown. But then people who have this attitude don't really understand exactly what faith is. Most think that faith is setting back and wishing for something to come true. And that couldn't be further from the truth.
Faith is based on knowledge of the Word of God. Faith is confidence based on the understanding of life as taught by the Word of God. Faith is the true orientation to God, to life, to people, and to self.
The Israelites wandered for forty years. The unfaithful generation died and a new generation rose up without seeing the miracles of God in Egypt. They had only the stories from which to build up their faith.
Then God, through Moses, directed Joshua to lead the people across the Jordan River and the people obeyed without question.
Their first obstacle was Jericho. Jericho was frontier city. It had walls which were so thick and so high, that it was virtually impregnable. Most armies would have set up a siege, and then tried to break down a section of the walls so as to gain access into the city in order to conquer it.
God does not need mans methods in order to accomplish His will.
Did an earthquake really cause the city walls to crumble? Perhaps. But then, who can predict an earthquake let alone cause it at a specific time?
The Israelites marched around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times, then the trumpets sounded, and the people shouted, and the walls simply crumbled. The city was theirs for the taking.
The occupants of the city probably thought that all of this marching was a bit odd, but then the citizens of Jericho were scared stiff because of the reputation of the Israelites, and of their God.
Josh. 6:3-5
3 And you shall march around the city, all the men of war circling the city once. You shall do so for six days. 4 Also seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And it shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up every man straight ahead.' NASB
The walls of Jericho were an obstacle which faith totally destroyed. In your life you will face obstacles of many sorts. God has a plan for your life and if you pursue your spiritual life consistently and persevere in your daily spiritual growth, then Gods plan for your life will function perfectly. You need do nothing as it were. Your obstacles will disintegrate before you, and you will get to see it happen.
You still are required to be responsible in life. You still have obligations. You still need an education, a job, you must pay your bills, and tend to your families needs and so forth, but remember that in life you will either live in the jungle environment, or you will live within the fellowship sphere of Gods will.
Person A and person B both go to school, both work, both have families, both have similar lives. Person A ignores God in his life and his life is dependent on the jungle. Person B pursues his spiritual life, and God provides for all of his needs.
Person A will live a miserable life and will see many failures in life. He will have mental and emotional pressure always in his life.
Person B knows that God will provide for all of his needs. If he loses his job, God will have another one waiting for him. If he has a medical crisis, God will provide a way for him to get through it. He has a relaxed mental attitude based on his confidence and faith in God.
The Israelites saw a huge walled city. The human view would be that it couldn't be taken. Faith looks at any obstacle and knows that nothing is impossible for God. The walls fell and those standing on the walls died immediately. The Israelites did virtually nothing to conquer Jericho. They only had to obey Gods mandates.
God gives you mandates too. Review the spiritual checklist study when you get the chance. Pursue Gods Word in your life and your faith will grow automatically. Ignore Gods Word and your spiritual life, and you will have very little basis for a productive relationship with God.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
