2 Bear ye [bastazo] one another's [allelon] burdens [baros], and [kai] so [houto] fulfil [anapleroo] the law [nomos] of Christ [Christos]. KJV-Interlinear
2 Bear one
another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ. NASB
Too many people misunderstand and therefore interpret wrongly, that the law of Christ is the command to love one another, when in fact the law of Christ is the whole realm of doctrine of faith, which is being compared here in Galatians, with the law of Moses, which is the contrasting concept of human works.
And Paul states here that bearing one anothers burdens is a fulfillment of the law of Christ. But what is bearing, and what are the burdens?
To bear, ‘bastazo,’ means to endure, to declare, to sustain, to walk. And when this is applied to somone else, then it means to understand, to comprehend, to know what it is that they are going through. In other words, to have empathy based on understanding.
Burdens, ‘baros,’ means weight, load, to go down as in being weighed down, deep, depth, to walk. And here it applies to the pressures and heavy burdens of ones daily life.
Note, that understanding the problems of someone else, is not intended to coddle them or to enable them, or to somehow justify their response or reaction to their burdens such that they seem to be given excuses or free reign over their behavior. Responsibility and accountability are likewise integral components of the law of Christ.
Understanding the problems of others, helps you to understand your problems when they enter into your life. But also, there needs to be a way out, a positive outlook, a forward thinking that will offset or eliminate the possibility of the ‘poor me’ or the ‘feel sorry for me’ attitude that avoid any and all attempts to get out of the predicament, whatever it may be.
In many cases, the problems are solvable. But in some cases the problems have no earthly solution and thus one has to learn to live with them and simultaneously look forward to Christ, through doctrine for the better life, in the next life, and to the better life now, through spiritual growth, which prepares you for that future better life.
We avoid judging, we avoid criticizing, we avoid looking down our nose in arrogance. We avoid the presumption that just because we can do something, does not mean that someone else can do it as easily.
Everyone has their limitations physically, mentally, and certainly spiritually, all of which need to be considered when interacting with others.
