You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
3 John 1:9-10
9 I wrote [grapho] unto the church [ekklesia]: but [alla] Diotrephes [Diotrephes], who [ho] loveth to have the preeminence [philoproteuo] among them [autos], receiveth [epidechomai] us [hemas] not [ou].
10 Wherefore [dia] [touto], if [ean] I come [erchomai], I will remember [hupomimnesko] his [autos] deeds [ergon] which [hos] he doeth [poieo], prating against [phluareo] us [hemas] with [logos] malicious words [poneros]: and [kai] not [me] content [arkeo] therewith [epi] [toutois], neither [oute] doth [epidechomai] he himself [autos] receive [epidechomai] the brethren [adelphos], and [kai] forbiddeth [koluo] them that would [boulomai], and [kai] casteth [ekballo] them out of [ek] the church [ekklesia]. KJV-Interlinear
9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say. 10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, neither does he himself receive the brethren, and he forbids those who desire to do so, and puts them out of the church. NASB
There are valid reasons for receiving recognition of accomplishments and there are invalid reasons for receiving same. Many in politics have no ability nor the leadership capabilities but they seek authority or preeminence just the same. Their driving force is their lust and their ego.
They neither earn nor deserve their positions. Often their positions are not even necessary but are positions manufactured merely for the purpose of giving them a position of authority. This is bureaucracy at its worst. And is always the result of big government.
Diotrephes was such a person. He rejected the authority of John. He rejected his advice. He rejected his teaching and instruction. He rejected and would not even receive people or representatives who came in John's behalf. Diotrephes is a typical person who has no real legitimate authority, nor even a real calling to leadership, but he desires it just the same.
He makes up his own rules. He makes up his own policies. He rejects Gods counsel in so doing.
Diotrephes means 'nourished by Jupiter.' Jupiter is the Latin name of Zeus. Jupiter was considered the Latin equivalent of the Greek 'Zeus,' the highest or king god in the Greek pantheon.
Diotrephes was driven by ambition fueled by his own arrogance. He had nothing but malicious words for John or anyone who expressed an opinion in the Christian belief. He sanctions teaching of false doctrine and anyone who subscribes in his works along with Him, shares in his 'evil works.' Evil works are implied by the meaning of his name, 'nourished by Jupiter.'
People such as Diotrephes are obvious from their pattern of policy against Christian doctrine. They are selfish, controlling, argumentative, disinterested in a legitimate daily Bible study. They have more excuses for not engaging in the study of the Bible, and are critical of those who do. They will offer antagonism and criticism for nearly every situation and will offer no practical solutions for even common daily problems.
People like this never accept responsibility for their own decisions and actions, in fact they will try to defer all decisions to others such that when they fail, others will be blamed and not themselves. They will always hold themselves in an ambiguous light. They never stand on principle. They have no principles, but will change with public opinion in order to keep their leadership position.
Their preeminence and power is all they are interested in. The true purpose of a position of leadership, which is to provide leadership, is of no importance to them. The people whom they lead are only pawns and stepping stones to the satisfaction of their own lust and ego.
Needless to say this is not the pattern or life style of the Christian life.
