You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. 3 John 1:2-4 2 Beloved [agapetos], I wish [euchomai] above [peri] all things [pas] that thou [se] mayest prosper [euodoo] and [kai] be in health [hugiaino], even as [kathos] thy [sou] soul [psuche] prospereth [euodoo]. 3 For [gar] I rejoiced [chairo] greatly [lian], when the brethren [adelphos] came [erchomai] and [kai] testified [martureo] of the truth [aletheia] that is in thee [sou], even as [kathos] thou [su] walkest [peripateo] in [en] the truth [aletheia]. 4 I have [echo] no [ou] greater [meizoteros] [touton] joy [chara] than to [hina] hear [akouo] that my [emos] children [teknon] walk [peripateo] in [en] truth [aletheia]. KJV-Interlinear 2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I was very glad when brethren came and bore witness to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. NASB In the jungle of this world, if you are born witty, gifted, agile, smart, silver spooned, and so forth, then your success in this world has an edge above and beyond others who lack these attributes or qualities. But regardless of these advantages, they are all limited, and they all evaporate from existence when you leave this world. You might even think that your life is subject to luck or connections, or even totally up to your own hustle and effort. But that is not so. Even to the most negative (and gifted) person, God controls all of the aspects of your life. From the moment you were born, to the moment of your death, you are not in total command of the daily details of your life. You had no control over your birth just as you have no control over the weather, or the people you will run into, in life. Only arrogance would presume to have total control over ones self. In the spiritual realm, your earthly or jungle attributes are irrelevant. You are in effect placing control over the daily details of your life into Gods hands. As your soul prospers, then so your whole life will prosper. Your soul is the real you, not your physical body. Your soul is the immaterial you, and by the way, was not created in the womb. People cannot create human life. Only God can do that. Biological life comes from the womb. Soul prosperity is complimented by your spiritual production. Spiritual production comes from the application of spiritual principles to ones daily life. Of course you have to learn the principles before you can use them. Your use of spiritual phenomena contributes to your spiritual growth. Review our study in Isa. 11 and Rev. 1 with respect to the seven spirits of spiritual growth. These are simply seven descriptive terms for the various functions or stages of your spiritual life. There is also a picture chart describing the seven spirits, and that chart should be in your Bible Study E-Book if you have downloaded the charts. Go to the Table of Contents and click on the Library link, and then select the Charts link which will load the Charts E-Book, then scroll down to the Seven Spirits chart and select it. The chart is available online too. True prosperity comes in the spiritual realm. When your soul prospers, which is an eternal prosperity by the way, then that prosperity will overflow to the rest of your life. As God takes care of your soul, so also, God will take care of the details of your daily life on this earth. John is wishing the best for Gaius (and every reader) for their life, even as their soul enjoys prosperity. Note, that when you function in fellowship and are advancing in your spiritual life, then you will only have spiritual prosperity, which in turn will overflow into the rest of your daily life. Spiritual participation never results in any kind of loss or failure. Note too, that spiritual prosperity does not mean that your physical health will magically correct itself, regardless of your physical condition. If you have the flu, then you will have to wait for it to run its course. If you are missing a leg, you will not grow back a replacement leg. It does mean however that regardless of the circumstances of your life, and because your soul is experiencing spiritual prosperity, then your mental condition will be gaining capacity and the ability to deal with any and all problems which life has to throw at you. You will be able to meet stressful situations head on with poise and clarity of thought. We can use that woman in Atlanta as a good example of this. She was confronted by an escaped murderer who held her hostage for a short while, this past weekend. She had the presence of mind to talk with him and convince him to surrender himself to the authorities. She had great courage and poise throughout the ordeal. Most people would have fallen apart emotionally if confronted with a man carrying a gun who was threatening them. It is a great joy in ones life, when you are confronted by some extreme set of circumstances, and to come through it with flying colors. But an even greater joy comes into ones life when you advance in your spiritual life toward spiritual maturity. The only way to attain spiritual maturity is to conduct your daily life as John describes it here, in a daily walk of truth. Which simply means that you live your daily life by the principles taught in the Bible.
