10 For [gar] the love of money [philarguria] is [esti] the root [rhiza] of all [pas] evil: [kakos] which [hos] while some [tis] coveted after, [oregomai] they have erred [apoplanao] from [apo] the faith, [pistis] and [kai] pierced [peripeiro] themselves [heautou] through [peripeiro] with many [polus] sorrows. [odune]KJV-Interlinear
10 For the love of money is a
root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from
the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang. NASB
The phrase, love of
money, comes from a compound word, philos, meaning
friend, fond, associate, and the word, arguros,
meaning silver. This is a reference to
the mental attitude, not to the article or item, which is the object of the
attitude.
Root, means just
that.It is the origin, cause or source. Therefore the attitude is the origin or cause
which produces evil.
And
why?Because the object (money), was coveted
after, oregomai, desired with a desire that was as
large as a mountain.The
prefix from, oros, means large or mountain.
Therefore, the object
(money) was sought after with such a tremendous desire that all other concerns
were set aside, or overshadowed as a mountain might overshadow a small home. The attitude is made the huge home.
This focus on such
material things (money or whatever ones focus is on),
leaves no room for paying attention to anything else.
And even though money
is used here as an example, all worldly attractions are in view.Whether you focus on money or social
activities with friends, drugs or hobbies, texting on your phone or watching
television, or whatever occupies the majority of your time and attention day in
and day out, then that huge degree of attention becomes an evil.
Why?Because, as we studied in
the last verse, it becomes a snare, a trap. The repetition with which
you focus your attention on something such that all other things in life are
squeezed out of your life (especially your Bible study), then that object or
activity becomes a self imposed trap. One that you voluntarily climb into and cannot get
out.
It is like a strong
drug which causes delusion and a fixation on something, such that you cannot
let go.So your work, your education,
your responsibilities in life, your Bible study, all get pushed aside, and your
activity or focus become your prison.
Now, before we get too
far, just one quick point here. This
trap is more than a just a trap for individuals and their attitude toward
things, it is also a trap where political philosophies are involved.
When governments pursue
evil programs or philosophies, they get so involved in them that when they turn
badly, getting out of them is nearly impossible, therefore the bad programs get
turned up and pursued even more, and life gets worse and worse.
In order to get out of
them (the bad programs), hard decisions for true principles have to be made,
and that means that government has to let go of its controls and regulations,
and that is difficult for governments and politicians to do.Likewise when there are citizens who are the beneficiaries
of bad programs, then they too do not like to let go of their free assistance
or programs that they have become accustomed to.This is especially true for systems like
socialism, communism, and such systems.
And when things get so
bad, then the only way out is through intensive crime, revolt, war, famine, or
economic depression, or such things, that force the changes needed in order to
get society back on track.
But that is really
another study for apostasy gone overboard in society.
This verse is more of
an application for individuals.However,
when the greater numbers of individuals turn sour on doctrine, then larger
issues on a national or international scale become relevant.
Piercing through with
many sorrows, should be clear now.Life,
when doctrine is ignored, can and will become a source of hardship and sorrow
for people, both individually and collectively if a larger number in society
become distracted with worldly priorities.
You lose out in your
spiritual life. You lose out in your
eternal life s blessings. You may even
lose out as society declines and social norms lower their standards for truth,
honesty and so forth.This includes
economic problems, employment problems, loss of freedoms, mental health issues,
and so forth.
