1 Peter 2:1
1 Wherefore [oun] laying aside [apotithemi] all [pas] malice [kakia], and [kai] all [pas] guile [dolos], and [kai] hypocrisies [hupokrisis],
and [kai] envies [phthonos], and [kai] all [pas] evil speakings [katalalia],
KJV-Interlinear
1 Therefore, putting aside all
malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,NASB
Therefore, because of
the details of chapter one, because God has done everything for us, because the
world has done nothing and can do nothing for us, because we have phenomenal
blessings waiting for us, both in this life and especially in the next, because
of all of these things and more, we should make a change in our lives.
We should make a
change that will be permanent and that will be compatible with truth, and
enhance our overall life, towards making us complete in the truest sense.
We should put off the
sin nature.Laying aside, apotithemi,
suggests a complete change of wardrobe, a complete change of clothing.Whereas your typical clothing may be casual
clothing or work clothing, now your attire should be more of a formal
nature. This is the contrast, a dramatic
contrast, such as comparing blue jeans to a tux or evening gown.
The sense here means
that you need to change your entire thinking process.Your mind needs a complete overhauling and
transformation, from that which is driven by the sin nature, to that which is
driven by the Word of God.
Malice, guile,
hypocrisy, envy and slander are general terms referring to the entire realm of
the sin nature, both of sin and of human good.
Malice generally
refers to hostility or hate. The causing
of injury for the mere gratification of it, or to get even.
Guile refers to
deceit, fraud, dishonesty, deception, taking advantage of another especially
when you know better.
Hypocrisy refers to
pretense, insincerity, duplicity, double standards, and such.
Envy refers to sins
of greed or desire, or wanting something that someone else has, or hating them
for what they have.
Slander is a reference
to the works of the mouth.Speaking ill
of another, with malice, with hate, with insults, with the intent of doing
harm, with the intent of promoting yourself at another's expense.
And whether any of
these attitudes or actions have a valid reason behind them, they are always
without merit, never condoned, and should be put away and never turned to,
within your life.
God gives you gifts,
phenomenal gifts, and your receive more and more gifts as you divorce your life
from the sin nature. The sin nature only
removes these gifts from your life. Can an act of hate be worth more than a
gift of infinite value?Measure your
infinite loss against a temporary gratification from sin, then put away sin.
